Daniel Porter, known professionally as Daniel Portman, is a Scottish actor born on the 13th of February 1992 in Glasgow, Scotland. He is best known for playing the role of Podrick Payne in the hit HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones from 2012 to 2019. Portman is the son of actor Ron Donachie and Fiona Biggar, and has a sister named Naomi. His father Ron also had a recurring role in Game of Thrones as Ser Rodrik Cassel. Portman was born in Glasgow and grew up in Strathbungo on the city's Southside. He attended Shawlands Academy, where he played rugby and was named head boy, and then pursued a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Acting at Reid Kerr College in Paisley.
Portman has been acting since he was sixteen years old. His first role was in the British supernatural horror thriller film Outcast (2010), in which he starred as Paul alongside actor James Nesbitt, as well as fellow Thrones actress Kate Dickie. In 2011, this was followed by a role in the popular Scottish soap opera River City. Portman’s second film role was a small part in Scottish comedy The Angels' Share opposite Paul Brannigan, John Henshaw and William Ruane. It was then announced on the 24th of August 2011 that he was cast as a squire named Podrick Payne in the award-winning HBO fantasy drama series Game of Thrones. Portman portrayed this role from the second season to the eighth and final season. He also contributed vocals to a version of the track "Jenny's Song," which featured in the season eight episode "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms". Other film and television credits include the 2016 British-Irish drama film The Journey, starring Timothy Spall and Colm Meaney, the 2018 American sci-fi thriller film In the Cloud, opposite Justin Chatwin, Adetomiwa Edun, Nora Arnezeder and Gabriel Byrne, the 2019 British historical fiction war film Robert the Bruce, starring Angus Macfadyen and Jared Harris, and BBC One’s 2021 police procedural series Vigil, which also co-starred Game of Thrones actors Rose Leslie and Stephen Dillane. In 2022, Portman will be starring in two Scottish thriller series: The Control Room and Karen Pirie.
