Joseph Maxwell Dempsie is an English actor, born on the 22nd of June 1987 in Liverpool, England. He grew up in West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire, where his Scottish father was a social worker. Dempsie received his acting training from the Central Junior Television Workshop in Nottingham, and was also educated at The West Bridgford School. He is best known for his roles as Chris Miles in the E4 teen comedy-drama Skins (2007–2008) and as Gendry Baratheon in Game of Thrones (2011–2019).

Dempsie's earlier acting credits include the medical dramas Peak Practice (2000), Doctors (2001–2003), and Sweet Medicine (2003), as well as the films One for the Road and Heartlands (2003). He also appeared in This is England '86 (2010), it’s sequel series This is England '90 (2015), and Born and Bred, a BBC documentary-drama about Tony Martin. Dempsie has also appeared as the villainous John in The Fades (2011), as well as Duncan McKenzie in 2009's The Damned United, starring alongside notable English actors Michael Sheen, Jim Broadbent, Stephen Graham and Timothy Spall. In November 2008, he appeared in “The Moment of Truth,” episode 10 of the BBC show Merlin. He plays Will, who is an old friend of Merlin's, from the village in which they grew up together. In 2010, he then voiced Steven, a gay teenager from Nottinghamshire in the Radio 4 play Once Upon a Time.

In 2011, Dempsie joined the cast of HBO’s hit fantasy series Game of Thrones during it’s first season as the king’s bastard son, Gendry Baratheon, based on George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels. He appeared in the first three seasons, and later returned for the seventh season, as well as it’s eighth and final season. During his run on Thrones, Dempsie also starred in several films, including Blitz (2011), Monsters: Dark Continent (2014), Burn Burn Burn (2015), Dark River (2017) and Been So Long (2018). More recent television credits include the British espionage thriller series Deep State (2018-2019), the four-part Channel 4 drama series Adult Material (2019) and the Netflix thriller series Pieces of Her (2021), starring Oscar nominee Toni Collette, which is based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Karin Slaughter.
