Aidan Gillen Murphy is an Irish actor born on the 24th of April 1968 in Drumcondra, Dublin, Ireland. Gillen was the youngest of six children born to Patricia (née Gillen) and Denis Murphy. He was educated at St. Vincent's C.B.S. in Dublin's Glasnevin neighbourhood and then he began his acting career as a teenager with the Dublin Youth Theatre, playing Nick Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Project Arts Centre before moving to London, England.

Gillen rose to stardom in 1999 play the lead role of Stuart Alan Jones in the Channel 4 television series Queer as Folk and its sequel, for which he received a British Academy Television Award nomination for Best Actor. He was also nominated for a Tony Award for his Broadway role in Harold Pinter's play The Caretaker and has also been nominated for an Irish Times Theatre Award for his portrayal of Teach in the Dublin Gate Theatre's 2007 production of David Mamet's American Buffalo. In 2004, having been spotted by producers in The Caretaker, Gillen was cast as Tommy Carcetti in the acclaimed HBO series The Wire, for which he received an Irish Film & Television Award for Best Actor in a Lead Role.

Gillen is most well-known for his role as the scheming Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish on the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones (2011), for which he received his second Irish Film & Television Award nomination. He appeared in the first seven seasons, until his character's death in the season seven finale episode. Other film and television credits include Wake Wood (2009), Blitz (2011), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Shadow Dancer (2012), Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015) and it’s follow-up film Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018) and Bohemian Rhapsody (2018). In 2019, Gillen’s next series after leaving Game of Thrones was The History Channel's Project Blue Book, which ran for two seasons. Following this, he had a role in the American crime thriller Mayor of Kingstown (2021), opposite Jeremy Renner and Dianne Wiest.
