BACKGROUND

Gilly, named after the gillyflower, is one of the Free Folk who lives beyond the Wall. The Free Folk is the self-given name for the people who live in the lands beyond the Wall, still on the continent of Westeros but beyond the northern border of the Seven Kingdoms. The name they employ makes reference to their society, which recognizes no inherent or hereditary political authority, except for leaders whom they choose to follow. The people of the Seven Kingdoms refer to the Free Folk derogatorily as "wildlings," while the Free Folk refer to those south of the Wall as "kneelers." Normally the wildlings are divided into many different rival clans, but occasionally, they unite behind a single over-chieftain known as a King-Beyond-the-Wall, currently being Mance Rayder.

Gilly is one of the many daughters of Craster, a wildling who lives north of the Wall in a fortified homestead, rather grandly called Craster's Keep. Craster permits the Night's Watch the use of the keep as a refuge and resupply post for them in return for otherwise leaving him alone and the occasional bribe. The keep is large enough to host a garrison of men, and is located about sixty miles from the home of the Night’s Watch, Castle Black.

Gilly is somewhat childlike in appearance and has a soft and shy voice. She lives with Craster at his keep along with her several sisters. As well as being a daughter of Craster, she is also one of his wives, as Craster routinely marries his own daughters, as well as impregnate them. Having been raised by abuse, and not having known any other men for a long time, Gilly is far more comfortable around other women. At the time of the War of the Five Kings, Craster has nineteen wives, including Gilly. When the Night's Watch arrive at the keep and encounter Gilly, she is pregnant with the incestuous child of her own father.
