IN DEVELOPMENT with hbo

A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS

In 2021, it was announced that a potential Game of Thrones prequel series based on The Tales of Dunk & Egg is in development at HBO amidst discussions of the World of Westeros franchise expansion. In March 2022, George R.R. Martin confirmed that screenwriter Steve Conrad is attached as showrunner, and the project has advanced from the "pitch" phase to the "pilot script" phase. It was later announced on April 12th, 2023 that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight has been officially ordered to full series with HBO, confirming Steve Conrad as showrunner and attaching George R.R. Martin, Ira Parker, Ryan Condal and Vince Gerardis as executive producers. It's possible that each season will have a different sub-heading in keeping with the novellas, i.e. the second season could be called "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Sworn Sword" .

The Tales of Dunk and Egg are a series of prequel novellas written by George R.R. Martin, which begin ninety years before the events of the A Song of Ice and Fire novels (on which Game of Thrones is based). They follow the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Prince Aegon "Egg" Targaryen who is the younger brother of Maester Aemon. Though Egg is a boy at the start of the series he will eventually grow up to become King Aegon V, or "Aegon the Unlikely".

snow

On June 16, 2022, it was announced that HBO has entered into early development on its first sequel to its blockbuster fantasy drama Game of Thrones, tentatively titled Snow: a live-action spinoff series centered on the fan-favorite character Jon Snow. Kit Harington is attached to reprise the role should a series move forward. The actor was twice nominated for an Emmy for his portrayal of an action hero who struggles to uphold his family’s noble values in a brutal world. In Thrones’ eighth-and-final season, Jon Snow discovered his true name was Aegon Targaryen, a potential heir to the Iron Throne. In the series finale, he was exiled from Westeros following the assassination of Daenerys Targaryen and journeyed beyond the Wall with his direwolf Ghost and the wildlings to leave his old life behind.

The development signals an intriguing new direction in HBO’s handling of author George R.R. Martin’s fantasy universe, perhaps most boldly from a creative standpoint, the project would upend Thrones’ final season as the last word on the fates of the surviving characters. In theory, the project could open the door for other surviving characters from the Thrones universe to reappear. Martin himself confirmed his involvement in the series on June 23, 2022, stating that it was Kit Harington’s idea, who has assembled his own team of screenwriters and multiple draft scripts have already been produced.

ten thousand ships

In 2021, it was announced that a potential World of Westeros prequel series based on Princess Nymeria is in development at HBO, tentatively titled Ten Thousand Ships. On May 25, 2021, Deadline posted an update that confirmed the series had advanced to HBO ordering a pilot script from screenwriter Amanda Segel. It remains to be seen whether HBO will order a pilot episode to be filmed. In March 2022, author George R.R. Martin stated that the project is proceeding with development, confirming that Ten Thousand Ships is the actual working title of the project. In April 2023, Martin then confirmed that “the Nymeria show is still in development. So is the Sea Snake show. Just had a great week on that one, working with writers. And there are others, both live action and animated.”

Set roughly one thousand years before the War of the Five Kings, the story follows Princess Nymeria of the Rhoynar after her people are defeated in a devastating war with the Valyrian dragonlords (ancestors of House Targaryen), and she rallies the survivors to flee Essos in a refugee fleet of "ten thousand ships" in search of a new home. Their journey takes them to many different lands around the Summer Sea, from the dinosaur-infested jungles of Sothoryos to the tropical paradise of the Summer Islands, before they finally migrate to Dorne, becoming the ancestors of the modern Dornishmen and House Martell.

the sea snake

In 2021, it was announced that a potential World of Westeros prequel series based on a young Corlys Velaryon is in development with HBO, tentatively titled The Sea Snake. In March 2022, George R.R. Martin confirmed that screenwriter Bruno Heller is attached as showrunner, and the project has advanced from the "pitch" phase to the "pilot script" phase, though it is unknown if HBO will ultimately order a pilot to be filmed. Martin also confirmed that the current working title for the project is The Sea Snake, having previously been titled Nine Voyages. This was changed due to the fact that HBO did not prefer having two shows in development with numbers in the title, the other being Ten Thousand Ships. In April 2023, Martin then confirmed that “the Nymeria show is still in development. So is the Sea Snake show. Just had a great week on that one, working with writers. And there are others, both live action and animated.”

The series is essentially a direct prequel to the House of the Dragon series itself, following the sea adventures of young Corlys Velaryon, nicknamed "The Sea Snake," on his famous nine voyages of exploration to lands beyond Westeros. His journeys will take him and his crew to the very edges of the known world, from the Shivering Sea in the north, to the far east of the Jade Sea, becoming the first man from the Seven Kingdoms to directly voyage beyond Qarth to the Golden Empire of Yi Ti itself. Young Corlys will acquire so many exotic riches from his voyages to the east that by his own hand he will make himself the richest man in Westeros. This wealth will make him a key figure in royal politics, and set the stage for the rivalries and machinations faced by adult Corlys in the House of the Dragon series.

AEGON’s CONQUEST

A pitched live-action television series based on Aegon's Conquest is being actively discussed at HBO under the evolving World of Westeros franchise expansion. Due to its description, the story will likely be adapted from the chapter "Aegon's Conquest" from George R.R. Martin’s novel: Fire & Blood, which also serves as the adaptation material for the House of the Dragon prequel series. On April 3, 2023, Variety officially revealed that the prequel based upon the War of Conquest is in early stages of development, also noting the potential for a feature component to the project as well, in which HBO and Warner Bros. could release a feature film that would lead directly into the series. As of yet, no showrunner or writers have been attached to the series.

The War of Conquest, also known as the Targaryen Conquest, was a major war initiated by Aegon Targaryen in order to conquer the continent of Westeros. Supported by his sister-wives, Rhaenys and Visenya, as well as their three dragons: Balerion, Meraxes and Vhagar, Aegon the Conqueror successfully unified six of the Seven Kingdoms under the invading forces of House Targaryen within two years.

the golden empire

The Golden Empire is a potential animated Game of Thrones prequel series in development at HBO, about the Golden Empire of Yi Ti - located in the far east of Essos, and loosely analogous to Imperial China. On July 16, 2021, The Hollywood Reporter posted a major update that HBO was considering three separate Game of Thrones animated projects, one of which was about the Golden Empire of Yi Ti. This region hasn't been visited in the main A Song of Ice and Fire novels, so this project would apparently draw on the extensive chapter about Yi Ti in The World of Ice & Fire, the sourcebook published in 2014.

On March 9, 2022, George R.R. Martin himself gave an update that the project is proceeding well, confirming that the project has advanced beyond the pitch/negotiations phase to actually having a writer attached, as well as a concept artist, and also that the working title now being used is The Golden Empire. No further news has been provided with regards to the other two animated projects in development. In April 2023, Martin then confirmed that “the Nymeria show is still in development. So is the Sea Snake show. Just had a great week on that one, working with writers. And there are others, both live action and animated.”

the great tourney at harrenhal

On March 30, 2021, George R.R. Martin himself publicly announced that he was developing another prequel, not for television or animation, but as a stage-play: the story of the Great Tourney at Harrenhal, the opening event that set Robert's Rebellion in motion. The live spectacular is currently in development to open on Broadway, West End and Australia. Martin also promised that the stage play would reveal secrets about what really happened at the Tourney that have never been revealed in the current novels (such as the true details about how Jon Snow's parents Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark met and fell in love). The play will also bring fan-favorites like Ned Stark, Jaime Lannister, Oberyn Martell and Barristan Selmy back to life while dramatizing the legendary event in Westerosi history.

The production company had already been hired, and Martin stated that it was set for a 2023 premiere. The play is from producers Simon Painter and Tim Lawson (The Illusionists), in partnership with Kilburn Live, and will have a story by Martin, who is working alongside award-winning playwright Duncan MacMillan (1984) and acclaimed director Dominic Cooke (The Courier).
