Peter Hayden Dinklage is an American actor born on June 11th, 1969 in Morristown, New Jersey, USA. Dinklage was born to Diane (Hayden), an elementary school teacher, and John Carl Dinklage, an insurance salesman. He is of German, Irish, and English descent. Raised in Mendham Township, New Jersey, he studied acting at Bennington College while working at a local guitar shop, starring in a number of amateur stage productions. Dinklage has a common form of dwarfism known as achondroplasia; he stands 4 ft 5 in (1.35 m) tall. He has used his celebrity status to highlight social conditions about dwarves, as in his acceptance speech at the 2012 Golden Globe ceremony.
Since his breakout role in The Station Agent (2003), Dinklage has appeared in numerous films and theatre plays. Since 2011, has has received critical acclaim for portraying Tyrion Lannister on the HBO television series Game of Thrones (2011–2019), for which he won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series a record four times. Dinklage also received a Golden Globe Award in 2011 and a Screen Actors Guild Award in 2020 for the same role. His theatre work includes plays such as "The Killing Act", "Imperfect Love", Ivan Turgenev's "A Month in the Country" as well as the title roles in William Shakespeare's "Richard III" and in Anton Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya". Dinklage also received acclaim for his first film, Living in Oblivion (1995), where he played an actor frustrated with the limited and caricatured roles offered to actors who have dwarfism. In 2003, he then starred in The Station Agent (2003), written and directed by Tom McCarthy, which garnered nominations such as for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role at the "Screen Actors Guild" and Best Male Lead at the "Film Independent Spirit Awards".
Aside from Game of Thrones, his television roles include shows such as Entourage (2004), Life as We Know It (2004), Threshold (2005) and Nip/Tuck (2003). Dinklage has also appeared in films such as Elf (2003), Lassie (2005), Find Me Guilty (2006), Penelope (2006), Underdog (2007), the English film Death at a Funeral (2007), as well as it’s American remake Death at a Funeral (2010), The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), Pixels (2015), Three Christs (2017), and the Oscar-nominated film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017). He also voiced Captain Gutt in Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012) and The Mighty Eagle in The Angry Birds Movie (2016). In 2018, he appeared as Eitri in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Avengers: Infinity War, then as Hervé Villechaize in the biopic film My Dinner with Hervé, and as the character Del in the post-apocalyptic romance drama I Think We're Alone Now. Most recently, Dinklage starred in the title role of Cyrano, a stage musical adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac written by his wife Erica Schmidt, with songs by the band The National. In 2021, he reprised the role in a 2021 film adaptation of the musical, for which he was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy.
