Graham McTavish is a Scottish actor and author who was born on the 4th of January, 1961 in Glasgow, Scotland. He went on to attend Queen Mary University of London, earning a degree in English literature. This degree course allowed him to perform in three Shakespeare plays per year while at school, and led to McTavish earning his Equity card after performing in a play by Samuel Beckett. He is best known for his roles as Dwalin in The Hobbit film trilogy, the voice of Vlad Dracula Țepeș in the Netflix animated franchise Castlevania, the voice of Loki in various Marvel animated projects, the "Saint of Killers" in the AMC series Preacher, and as Dougal MacKenzie and William Buccleigh MacKenzie in the Starz fantasy drama Outlander. He is also known for his voice roles in the video game franchise Uncharted.

Early in his career, McTavish did theatre work with the repertory theatres of London's West End and at the Dundee Rep with colleagues that included Jimmy Logan and Robert Robertson. In 1986, his first professional television role was in episode two of Walt Disney's mini-series Return to Treasure Island, and shortly after he made his film debut opposite Denzel Washington in Martin Stellman social drama film For Queen and Country (1988). In the late nineties, he went on to appear in several television series including the sci-fi adventure Highlander: The Series, ITV's Glasgow-based crime drama Taggart, BBC One’s long-running medical drama Casualty, BBC Two's sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf, and in ITV's police drama Heartbeat. Notable appearances in major films include Ali G Indahouse (2002), Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003, King Arthur (2004), Rambo (2008), Middle Men (2009), Secretariat (2010) and Colombiana (2011). Between 2012 and 2014, McTavish went on to portray the dwarf Dwalin in director Peter Jackson's award-winning The Hobbit trilogy, a prequel to the The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. He then completed 2014 with a supporting role in the action adventure film Plastic, opposite Ed Speleers, and the following year he portrayed boxing trainer Tommy Holiday in Creed, the seventh film in the Rocky franchise. Also in 2014, McTavish began his recurring role as Dougal MacKenzie in Starz's time-travel drama series Outlander. In 2016, he then landed the recurring role of William Munny, “the Saint of Killers” in AMC's drama Preacher, based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's comic book series of the same name. 2018 saw McTavish join the DC Universe as King Atlan in the Jason Momoa-led superhero film Aquaman. He then returned to Outlander in 2020 in a surprise appearance as William MacKenzie, the son of his previous recurring character Dougal. McTavish and Outlander co-star Sam Heughan then co-wrote Clanlands: Whisky, Warfare, and a Scottish Adventure Like No Other, which hit number one on the New York Times' Best Seller list for hardcover nonfiction. In 2021, it was announced that McTavish had joined the cast of HBO’s fantasy series House of the Dragon, a prequel to Game of Thrones, as the character of Ser Harrold Westerling. The series is set to premiere on August 21st, 2022.
