Matthew Needham is an English actor who was born on the 13th of April, 1984 in the United Kingdom. He graduated from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art with a B.A. (Hons) from the Three Year Acting Course in 2007. Needham is best known for his roles in the 2017 Netflix horror film The Ritual, the 2019 acclaimed HBO miniseries Chernobyl, a recurring role in the long-running BBC One medical drama Casualty, and the starring role in the 2015 Oscar-winning short film Stutterer.

Following his graduation at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, Needham has performed on stage for the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal Court, The National Theatre and Almeida Theatre. He was nominated for the Ian Charleson Award 2011 for his performance as Nero in Britannicus, a five-act tragic play by the French dramatist Jean Racine. The Ian Charleson Award is rewarded annually to the best classical stage performances in Britain by actors under the age of thirty. He has also performed at the Globe Theatre in the classic William Shakespeare plays Titus Andronicus and The Comedy of Errors.

Needham’s first television credit was the recurring role of Toby De Silva in the long-running BBC One medical drama Casualty, from 2007 to 2009. Following this, he made a guest appearance in 2010 opposite Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in the BBC period crime drama series Sherlock Holmes, as well as a guest role in 2011 for ITV’s medical drama series Monroe. In 2015, Needham starred in the short film Stutterer, written and directed by Benjamin Cleary. The acclaimed short film won an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film at the 88th Academy Awards. The following year, he appeared alongside Benedict Cumberbatch, Hugh Bonneville, Judi Dench, Sophie Okonedo and Tom Sturridge in BBC Two’s The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses, a television miniseries adaptation based on the works of William Shakespeare. Needham’s first film role came in 2017, portraying the role of Junkie in the Netflix horror film The Ritual, based on the 2011 novel of the same name by Adam Nevill. After making guest appearances in a few television series such as ITV’s Endeavour (2017), BBC One’s Doctors (2018) and HBO’s Chernobyl, he then portrayed Mr. Crowe in the first season of ITV’s historical drama series Sanditon.
