BACKGROUND
Prince Theon Greyjoy is the youngest son of Lord Balon Greyjoy and Lady Alannys Greyjoy. Balon is the head of House Greyjoy and Lord of the Iron Islands, one of the constituent regions of the Seven Kingdoms. House Greyjoy is one of the Great Houses of the realm and they rule the region from their seat at Pyke. Balon Greyjoy also holds the title Lord Reaper of Pyke. Prince Theon was born at Pyke as Lord Balon and Lady Alannys’ fourth child, following Rodrik, Maron, and Yara Greyjoy.
Lord Balon rose in rebellion with House Greyjoy against the Iron Throne. This was an attempt by House Greyjoy to break away and secure independence from the rest of the Seven Kingdoms. In part, this was in order to revive the Old Way, a term used by the Ironborn to refer to their traditional lifestyle of reaving and plundering. Lord Balon declared himself King and forged the Kingdom of the Iron Islands. He then led the Greyjoy Rebellion, supported by his vassal houses. The rebellion began eight years after King Robert Baratheon seized the Iron Throne during the great civil war known as Robert's Rebellion. The Ironborn were then crushed in the war led by King Robert, as well as Lord Eddard Stark of House Stark. Theon's brothers were both killed during battle and Lord Balon eventually surrendered. He was allowed to remain Lord of the Iron Islands, however, but on the condition that young Theon would remain a hostage and ward of Eddard Stark in his home at Winterfell.
While Theon's sister Yara remained on the Iron Islands with their father Balon, Theon went on to serve most of his childhood at Winterfell under Eddard Stark. Despite his status as a hostage at Winterfell, Theon is treated well by the Starks and the rest of their household, and he eventually came to see Eddard as a surrogate father. Theon also became close friends with Eddard’s eldest son, Robb Stark, and formed a friendly rivalry with Eddard’s bastard son named Jon Snow. His cocky arrogance and cavalier actions contrast with the staid ways of the North. Beneath his confident exterior, however, Theon is insecure, weak, and unsure of himself. This stems particularly from his conflicted family allegiances. Theon is also a skilled archer.
