HOUSE CORBRAY

  • Vance Corbray Sits on the Tribunal

  • Following the Tribunal

House Corbray of Heart's Home is a vassal house which holds fealty to House Arryn of the Eyrie, Lords Paramount of the Vale.. Their sigil is three black ravens in flight, each holding a separate red heart, on a white field.

The Corbrays are descended from Andals, and are proud to hold one of the purest Andal bloodlines in Westeros. King Qyle Corbray was the King of the Fingers during the Andal Invasion, when his fellow Andal warriors fought against the First Men in the Vale of Arryn under King Robar II Royce in the Battle of the Seven Stars. Robar killed Qyle and took his Valyrian steel sword, Lady Forlorn. Ser Gwayne Corbray was a renowned knight of House Corbray and member of the Kingsguard under King Daeron II Targaryen. Ser Gwayne dueled the rebel Daemon I Blackfyre in the Battle of the Redgrass Field for an hour despite being outmatched and grievously wounded. Following the War of the Ninepenny Kings, a Braavosi sellsword in service to House Corbray resettled in the Vale. His great-grandson is Lord Petyr 'Littlefinger' Baelish, who went on to marry Lady Lysa Arryn during the War of the Five Kings. The marriage was short-lived and Ser Vance, along with Lord Yohn Royce and Lady Anya Waynwood, then sat on a tribunal to investigate the sudden death of Lady Lysa. Like the other judges, Ser Vance assumes foul play on Littlefinger's part. During the tribunal, Ser Vance is made aware that Lord Baelish’s niece, "Alayne," is actually Sansa Stark, the House Stark heir of Winterfell. Vance agrees to keep Sansa’s secret and accepts her testimony that Lysa committed suicide. Because of his relationship with her, Baelish was able to heavily influence Lysa's son Robin Arryn, the new Lord Paramount of the Vale. To further his goal of sitting on the Iron Throne, Baelish orchestrated a huge conflict in Westeros that effectively started the War of the Five Kings, however, his role in the death Lysa Arryn and Lord Jon Arryn was finally exposed. He was later executed for his crimes.

In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, the Corbrays are an old but poor house. There is no character named Ser Vance Corbray, however, there are two known Corbray knights, brothers to Lord Lyonel Corbray, Ser Lyn and Ser Lucas. Ser Lyn is a noted warrior, and is also known to be a homosexual. Vance is most likely based off Lyn, as he was the Corbray present at the meeting between Petyr Baelish and the Vale lords. Lord Yohn Royce and the other present Vale lords do not inquire about Lysa's death, but demand that Littlefinger leaves the Vale and lets them look after Lysa's son.

House Egen is a vassal house from the Vale of Arryn, sworn to House Arryn, the Lords of the Eyrie and Lords Paramount of the Vale. Their sigil is a yellow sun, white crescent moon, and silver star on blue chief above white. Their words are "By Day or Night."

Past members of House Egen include Lord Xander Egen, who was head of the house and father to Elena Egen, as well as the grandfather to Lord Yohn Royce. Ser Vardis Egen was a knight who was captain of Jon Arryn's personal guard in the capital of King's Landing and then became captain of the guards in the Eyrie for Robin Arryn and his mother, Lady Lysa Arryn. Following the mysterious death of Jon Arryn, Ser Vardis leads a group of Vale knights who meet Lady Lysa’s sister, Catelyn Stark, and her prisoner Tyrion Lannister before they enter the Eyrie. Lysa orders Tyrion imprisoned in the sky cells for the accusation of organizing an attack on the young son of Lady Catelyn, Bran Stark. After spending some time in a sky cell, Tyrion demands a trial by combat. Though many men offer to fight as Lysa's champion, including Ser Jon Lynderly and Lord Eon Hunter, she asks Ser Vardis to represent House Arryn, and he accepts. In the ensuing duel, however, Vardis is killed and thrown through the Moon Door by his opponent Bronn. Lysa angrily snaps at Bronn that he didn't fight with honor. The sellsword agrees, before pointing to the Moon Door and noting that Ser Vardis did, which is effectively what got him killed. Some years later, following the apparent suicide of Lady Lysa, the young Robin Arryn becomes the new Lord Paramount of the Vale.

In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, not much is known of Ser Vardis Egen, but he is stated as having one young son.

Following the mysterious death of Lord Jon Arryn, Lady Lysa Arryn’s sister, Catelyn Stark, and her prisoner Tyrion Lannister arrive at the Eyrie. Lysa orders Tyrion imprisoned in the sky cells for the accusation of organizing an attack on the young son of Lady Catelyn, Bran Stark. After spending some time in a sky cell, Tyrion demands a trial by combat. Though many men offer to fight as Lysa's champion, including Eon Hunter and Ser Jon Lynderly, she asks Ser Vardis Egen to represent House Arryn, and he accepts.

In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, House Hunter are loyal bannermen of House Arryn. Lord Eon is the head of House Hunter and has been so for nearly sixty years. Half-crippled by gout, Lord Eon is older than Jon Arryn and has three quarrelsome sons: Gilwood, Eustace and Harlan. He's one of the many suitors of Lady Lysa.

HOUSE LYNDERLY

  • Jon Lynderly Offers His Services

  • Trial By Combat

House Lynderly of Snakewood is a vassal house from the Vale of Arryn, sworn to House Arryn, the Lords of the Eyrie and Lords Paramount of the Vale. Their sigil is eleven green snakes on a field of black.

Known members of House Lynderly include a knight named Ser Jon Lynderly. Though many men offer to fight as Lysa's champion, including Jon Lynderly and Lord Eon Hunter, she asks Ser Vardis Egen to represent House Arryn, and he accepts.

In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, a member of House Lynderly is the first to offer himself as Lysa Arryn's champion. Tyrion Lannister, however, doesn't recognize Lynderly's identity, thus it is unclear whether he is Ser Jon. Later on, the books identify two other members of House Lynderly: Lord Jon Lynderly and his son, Terrance, a boy who is later taken on as a squire for Robert Arryn by Lord Petyr Baelish, who is serving as Lord Protector of the Vale. Littlefinger assures Sansa Stark that Jon Lynderly is one of his friends.

HOUSE MOORE

  • Ser Mandon Serves King Joffrey

  • The Death of Ser Mandon

House Moore is a vassal house from the Vale of Arryn, sworn to House Arryn, the Lords of the Eyrie and Lords Paramount of the Vale. Their sigil is three bronze spearheads on white with a bronze border embattled.

Past members of House Moore include Ser Maladon Moore, a knight of the Kingsguard during the reign of Maegor I Targaryen, as well as Lady Perianne Moore, a lady companion of Princess Saera Targaryen who married Lord Jonah Mooton. During the War of the Five Kings, Ser Mandon Moore was a member of the Kingsguard in the capital city of King’s Landing, defending King Joffrey Baratheon and King Robert Baratheon before him. Ser Mandon was among the Kingsguard who attack Lord Eddard Stark when King Joffrey’s claim to the throne was contested and was also present when Ser Barristan Selmy is dismissed from the Kingsguard. Immediately prior to the Battle of the Blackwater, Ser Mandon informed the king’s mother, Cersei Lannister, of a groom and two maids attempting to flee with a stolen horse and some gold cups. She orders Ser Mandon to have Ser Ilyn Payne put their heads on spikes outside the stables as a warning. During the battle, Ser Mandon and Ser Boros Blount remained at the side of King Joffrey as he oversaw the city's defenses alongside Tyrion Lannister, the Hand of the King. When the forces of Stannis Baratheon reach the city and begin invading it, Joffrey departed for the safety of the Red Keep and ordered Ser Mandon and Ser Boros to aid Tyrion. On the battlefield, Mandon fought against Stannis’ soldiers and then, as commanded by the vengeful King Joffrey, he attempted to slay Tyrion, the king’s uncle. However, Ser Mandon was then killed by Tyrion's squire, Podrick Payne, who drove a lance through the back of his head.

In A Song of Ice and Fire novels, Tyrion Lannister learns that, prior to his assassination, Lord Jon Arryn, the late Hand of the King and Lord of the Vale, brought Ser Mandon with him to King's Landing from the Vale of Arryn. While Mandon is killed by Podrick Payne during the Battle of Blackwater, in the novels Payne pushes the knight into Blackwater Rush, drowning him under the weight of his armor.

HOUSE ROYCE

  • Yohn Royce Sits On the Tribunal

  • Lord Royce At Runestone

House Royce of Runestone is a vassal house from the Vale of Arryn, sworn to House Arryn, the Lords of the Eyrie and Lords Paramount of the Vale. They are formerly a Great House of Westeros that ruled over the Vale, until it was deposed by House Arryn during the Andal Invasion. Their seat is located east of the Eyrie, on the coast of the Narrow Sea. House Royce's heraldry consists of a pattern of black pebbles on a bronze field surrounded by runes in the Old Tongue of the First Men. Their house words are "We Remember."

During the Andal Invasion, the head of House Royce, King Robar II Royce, led and united the First Men of the Vale against the Andals, defeating the invaders in numerous battles before forcing them to retreat to the Narrow Sea. When Ser Artys Arryn, became the leader of the Andals, House Royce and the First Men met them in the Battle of the Seven Stars under the Giant's Lance. Although the First Men gained the advantage of high ground, the Ser Artys was able to outflank and defeat Robar II. House Royce would then swear fealty to House Arryn and became its most prominent vassal. Yohn Royce is the current Lord of Runestone and the head of the house. He is the father of Ser Robar Royce, who served in the Kingsguard of King Renly Baratheon, and Ser Waymar Royce, a ranger in the Night's Watch who was one of the first brothers to be killed by a White Walker upon their return. He is also related to Ser Vardis of House Egen. During the War of the Five Kings, Lord Petyr 'Littlefinger' Baelish’s, marriage to Lady Lysa Arryn was short-lived. Lord Yohn then sat on a tribunal to investigate the sudden death of Lady Lysa and assumes foul play on Littlefinger's part, however, he agrees to accepts Sansa Stark’s testimony that Lysa committed suicide. Because of his relationship with her, Baelish was able to heavily influence Lysa's son Robin Arryn, the new Lord of the Vale. To further his goal of sitting on the Iron Throne, Baelish orchestrated a huge conflict in Westeros that effectively started the War of the Five Kings, however, his role in the death Lysa Arryn and Lord Jon Arryn was finally exposed. Years later, he was executed for his crimes. Yohn Royce continued to foster Lord Robin Arryn and his house later joined the Northern and Targaryen armies during the Great War and the Battle of King’s Landing. Following this, Yohn and Robin attended the Great Council in the fallen capital city and both elected Bran Stark as the new King of the Six Kingdoms.

In A Song of Ice and Fire novels, the Royces are the most powerful family in the Vale after the Arryns. They descend from the First Men, which is a very rare exception in the Vale, as the First Men were almost completely driven from the Vale during the Andal Invasion. This extends to the point that in modern times the nobility of the Vale are considered to represent the purest Andal bloodlines, exterminating the local First Men instead of intermingling with them. However, House Royce managed to survive, and is very proud of their descent from the First Men, to the point that they include runes of the Old Tongue of the First Men in their sigil. They hold a blood-relationship to House Stark of the North: while it is an old connection, they still consider the Starks their kin, combined with their shared heritage as descendants of the First Men. After the Red Wedding, House Royce is close to open revolt over Lysa Arryn's failure to aid Robb Stark in his war.

HOUSE TOLLETT

  • Eddison as the New Lord Commander

  • The Death of Dolorous Edd

House Tollett of Grey Glen is a vassal house from the Vale of Arryn, sworn to House Royce of Runestone, who hold fealty to House Arryn, the Lords of the Eyrie and Lords Paramount of the Vale. House Tollett’s sigil is a pily grey and black and their words are "When All is Darkest."

Ser Torgold Tollett was an Andal knight during the Andal Invasion of Westeros. Known as a fearsome warrior, Torgold fought in the Battle of the Seven Stars. The First Men, under King Robar II Royce, had defended their position with sharpened stakes. The Andal cavalry charged six times, but were unable to break the line, until the seventh attempt, when Torgold broke throught the First Men ranks, allowing the Andals to rush through the gap. While the Seven Kingdoms were preoccupied with the War of the Five Kings, Eddison Tollett was a steward of the Night's Watch, located at Castle Black, a military order that guards the realm from foreign threats. Nicknamed ‘Dolorous Edd,’ he swore his oath to the Watch at the age of fifteen. Eddison participated in the conflict beyond the Wall, eventually taking command of the Wall during the Battle of Castle Black, and he later accompanied his Lord Commander, Jon Snow, to the village of Hardhome, where he witnessed the wildling massacre brought on by the White Walkers and their army of the dead. Shortly thereafter, following the death and resurrection of the Lord Commander during the Mutiny at Castle Black, Jon Snow orders the execution of the men responsible for his murder. Afterwards, he unofficially names Eddison as the acting Lord Commander before departing Castle Black and leaving the Night's Watch behind. Several months later, Dolorous Edd and the remaining Black Brothers join Jon and his armies at Winterfell after the Wall is breached by the White Walkers. He participates in the Great War, and although they are victorious against the army of the dead, Eddison is killed during battle while protecting his friend and former man of the Watch, Samwell Tarly.

In A Song of Ice and Fire novels, current Lord of the Grey Glen is Uthor Tollett. Dolorous Edd is apparently a member of a lesser branch of House Tollett, as he frequently makes comments indicating that he grew up in poverty, and his family were essentially living on the same level as peasants. In A Dance with Dragons, Jon Snow gives the command of Long Barrow to the ranger Iron Emmett, and assigns Edd as the chief steward and Emmett's second-in-command. Thus Edd is not present at Castle Black during Jon's assassination.

HOUSE WAYNWOOD

  • Anya Waynwood Sits on the Tribunal

  • Following the Tribunal

House Waynwood of Ironoaks is a vassal house which holds fealty to House Arryn of the Eyrie, Lords Paramount of the Vale. Their seat is the castle of Ironoaks, east of the Eyrie on the coast of the Narrow Sea and their heraldry consists of a black broken wheel on green.

Anya Waynwood, the Lady of Ironoaks, is a widow and the mother of Morton, Wallace and Ser Donnel Waynwood, the latter of whom serves the Arryns as the commander of the Bloody Gate, a castle that guards the western edge of the Vale of Arryn. During the War of the Five Kings, Lord Petyr ‘Littlefinger’ Baelish’s marriage to Lady Lysa Arryn was short-lived and Lady Anya, along with Lord Yohn Royce and Ser Vance Corbray, then sat on a tribunal to investigate the sudden death of Lady Lysa. Like the other judges, Anya assumes foul play on Littlefinger's part, however, she is made aware that Lord Baelish’s niece, "Alayne," is actually Sansa Stark, the House Stark heir of Winterfell. Lady Anya agrees to keep Sansa’s secret and accepts her testimony that Lysa committed suicide, later stating that there isn’t much justice to be meted out in suicide. Meanwhile, Ser Donnel greets another Stark heir at the Bloody Gate only to inform Arya Stark that her aunt Lysa had just recently died. Some time later, because of his relationship with her, Baelish was able to heavily influence Lysa's son Robin Arryn, the new Lord Paramount of the Vale. To further his goal of sitting on the Iron Throne, Baelish orchestrated a huge conflict in Westeros that effectively started the War of the Five Kings, however, his role in the death Lysa Arryn and Lord Jon Arryn was finally exposed. He was later executed for his crimes.

In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, the Waynwoods are powerful vassals of House Arryn and are known for their insistence on ceremony. Lady Anya Waynwood, Lord Yohn Royce and more nobles from the Vale come to the Eyrie not to inquire about Lysa's death, but to remove Littlefinger from his office as Lord Protector and take Robert Arryn (Robin's name in the novels) to foster at Runestone. Lady Anya's wards include the young Harrold Hardyng, the heir-presumptive of the Vale, to whom Littlefinger intends to wed Sansa Stark. He persuades Anya to give her permission to the betrothal by buying up the debts of her house.
