season five
Some weeks after murdering Tywin and Shae and fleeing King’s Landing to sail across the Narrow Sea, Tyrion Lannister is brought to the home of Illyrio Mopatis in Pentos, with the aid of Lord Varys. Varys wastes no time upon their arrival to Essos and attempts to persuade Tyrion to assist in his goal to restore House Targaryen to the Iron Throne. However, Tyrion simply wishes to drink himself to death after all that he has been through, renouncing his lordship and caring nothing for the stability of Westeros, a country he is done with after the pain caused from its politics.
Later on, Tyrion questions Varys on his motives for setting him free. Varys reveals his brother Jaime had asked him to and that he did for the benefit of the Seven Kingdoms. Varys then states that his goal was to bring peace and prosperity upon the kingdoms where those without power would never be prey to those who do; Tyrion merely states in a jaded tone that the former will always become prey to the latter, which is how the powerful become and stay that way in the first place. The two discuss that the Seven Kingdoms needs a ruler stronger than King Tommen, but gentler than Stannis Baratheon. Varys then makes Tyrion one final offer, telling him that he can simply drink himself to death here in Pentos, or ride with him to Meereen to meet the dragon queen, Daenerys Targaryen. After a moment, Tyrion agrees.
Some days later, Tyrion and Lord Varys depart Pentos in a large carriage. Tyrion remains despondent, and as he promised, he is continuing to drink himself into a stupor. Varys explains that they are traveling to Meereen by way of the Free City of Volantis. Varys points out that Tyrion was an effective ruler when he was acting Hand of the King, and that each of them were outsiders due to their deformities, as a eunuch and a dwarf. They enjoyed accumulating power, he says, but they also wall themselves off from other people, like hiding inside of a large carriage as they are now - but deep down, they were never satisfied being separate from society. Tyrion remains depressed and continues to insist that he's tired of being confined in a box of some sort. Varys, however, again warns him that he must remain hidden and it is unsafe to be seen publicly: Cersei has promised a lordship to any man who brings her his head. Tyrion scoffs and rhetorically asks if his sister is going to kill every dwarf in the world in the hope of eventually catching him.
Some time later, after days of confinement in the carriage, an impatient Tyrion eventually opts to get through Volantis on foot. The pair then move through the markets of Long Bridge, where Varys explains the meaning of the various tattoos Volantene slaves must sport. Varys nearly loses Tyrion, but then finds him observing the sermon of a Red Priestess. Tyrion says he is curious, since Thoros of Myr was the only Red Priest in King's Landing. The Red Priestess evangelizes in High Valyrian, telling the tale of how she was once a slave herself, and preaches of a prophesied savior, a “Dragon Queen.” Tyrion mocks her from afar to Varys until she turns to face him, seemingly hearing his words despite their distance. She stares at him intently, forcing the two to leave the scene in unease. Tyrion next leads Lord Varys to a brothel where they witness the sight of a prostitute who is dressed as Daenerys Targaryen, alluding to her infamy Varys tells Tyrion that a woman who inspires both sermons and whores is probably worth meeting. Tyrion then woos a different prostitute, but when she finally agrees to service him, he finds that he can't bring himself to patronize her, undoubtedly still reeling from his recent traumas. He then excuses himself and goes to urinate off the side of the bridge, with Varys losing sight of him. As a drunk Tyrion finishes, he is suddenly bound, gagged and abducted by a knight named Jorah Mormont, who declares that he is taking him to "the queen."
Now at the mercy of his captor, Tyrion is thrown into a stolen boat by Ser Jorah Mormont and they set sail from Volantis. En route, Tyrion pesters Jorah with muffled whining until he relents and removes Tyrion's gag. Tyrion notices that they are traveling east and not west towards Cersei Lannister in King's Landing, assuming incorrectly that his sister is who Jorah was referring to as “the queen.” Ser Jorah then reveals that he is taking Tyrion to the queen he serves: Daenerys Targaryen. Tyrion is pleasantly surprised by this and tries to convince Jorah that they are on the same side since he was traveling to meet Daenerys anyway. He accurately deduces who Jorah is by his appearance and equipment, and correctly assumes that Jorah must have been banished by Daenerys because she discovered that he was spying on her for Varys. Tyrion then mockingly asks Jorah if he really believes that he will earn a pardon for simply delivering him to Daenerys, believing the opposite outcome just as likely. Fed up with his captive’s tongue, Jorah strikes Tyrion across the face to keep him quiet.
Some time later, Jorah and Tyrion continue sailing towards to Meereen. Following Jorah's violent reaction to their previous conversation, Tyrion tries to civilize their relationship, asking where they are. As Jorah stands up to look at the foggy ruins on the horizon, Tyrion deduces that they are going to pass through the remains of Old Valyria, a shorter route to Meereen and one which pirates will avoid because of Valyria's reputation. Tyrion is apprehensive, but still excited to see the ruins of what was once the greatest civilization in the world. As they catch glimpses of domes, towers and aqueducts, Tyrion recites a poem about the Doom of Valyria, with Jorah joining in at the end. Suddenly, through the fog, Tyrion is astonished to see a large black dragon fly past them. Although he had been hearing about the dragons for some time, Tyrion is still awed to see one in person. The moment is interrupted, however, when they are abruptly attacked by stone men, men whose greyscale infection has reached its pinnacle, transforming them into feral monsters. During the fight, Tyrion falls overboard and is dragged under by a stone man, but he is rescued by Jorah and they eventually make it to a beach, where Tyrion regains consciousness. Jorah finally frees Tyrion from his binds and notices that none of the stone men managed to touch him, which would have passed the infection onto a person. Tyrion thanks Jorah for saving his life, and they decide to seek out a fishing village to acquire another boat, or walk the rest of the way to Meereen. Ser Jorah tells Tyrion to get some rest as he goes for firewood, but unbeknownst to Tyrion, Jorah notices that he has been infected with greyscale.
Tyrion and Jorah continue their quest to Meereen on foot. Tyrion is annoyed that they didn't find any villages to steal a boat or supplies from as Jorah had hoped, so they're slowly walking and only have berries and roots to eat. The topic of just why Tyrion was even in Volantis comes up, and Tyrion is surprised that Jorah did not ask earlier: he explains that he fled from Westeros because he killed his own father. He explains that Lord Tywin tried to have him executed for a crime he didn't commit, and then he found him “screwing the woman he loved.” Tyrion then says that despite how miserable Jorah is now, at least he can say that he had a good father. Jorah asks how he could have known his father Jeor Mormont, but Tyrion explains he visited the Wall once and met him: he was a great leader who seemed to genuinely care about all of his men, a rare thing in the world, but now as the eulogy for Night's Watch members goes, "the world will not see his like again." Jorah is shocked to realize he means that his father is dead. Tyrion becomes apologetic and says he thought that Jorah knew already. Jorah asks how he died: Tyrion says he only knows the report he heard, which said that his father led an expedition beyond the Wall, but there was a mutiny, and Jeor was murdered by his own men. Jorah processes this in silent grief, then changes the subject by saying that they have to keep moving.
Later, Tyrion openly questions Jorah's motives, as Jorah claims that he came to believe in Daenerys when he saw her emerge from the fire unharmed with the dragon hatchlings. Tyrion is convinced, now having seen one of her dragons in the flesh, but still expresses doubt as to whether or not Daenerys will be a good ruler. He asserts that her family was known for succumbing to madness due to their compound inbreeding, particularly her father, whom many still call “the Mad King.” During their conversation, they are spotted and then quickly captured by slavers bound for Volantis. The lead slaver, Malko, deems Tyrion as useless and orders his throat cut and his penis removed to be sold to a cock merchant. Tyrion, however, convinces them to do it when they have reached the cock merchant, buying himself some time. When Malko mentions that Daenerys has re-opened the fighting pits in Meereen, Tyrion successfully convinces Malko to sell them to Meereen in order to put Jorah, who is a renowned Westerosi fighter, in the fighting pits and make them rich. Following their capture, on the outskirts of Meereen, Jorah is sold to a slave trader named Yezzan zo Qaggaz. In desperation, as to not be separated from Ser Jorah, Tyrion attempts to convince Yezzan to also purchase him as well. and viciously beats his captor with his own chain to prove his worth. Yezzan relents and buys Tyrion, but mostly for his comedic value.
Directly after the sale, Yezzan escorts Tyrion and Ser Jorah to a small fighting pit in Meereen in order to test their skills and seek out those who are worthy to fight in the Great Pit of Daznak. When Jorah hears that Daenerys is present, he immediately elbows Yezzan in the face and enters the arena to fight. Meanwhile, Tyrion struggles to cut his chain until a guard comes and does it for him. Tyrion then enters the arena just as Jorah is being taken away and reveals himself as Jorah's "gift". He introduces himself and meets the dragon queen face-to-face, who is astounded by his unexpected arrival. Both Tyrion and Jorah are then immediately brought before Daenerys inside the Great Pyramid of Meereen. Daenerys initially advocates executing Tyrion as revenge against the Lannisters for betraying her family. However, Tyrion points out that he killed his mother in childbirth and shot his father in the heart before fleeing, adding that, because of these actions, he is the “greatest Lannister killer of our time.” Daenerys then asks his advice on what to do with Ser Jorah. Tyrion persuades her to spare Jorah’s life, but suggests banishing him again, since he did effectively betray her trust by spying on her for King Robert.
Later, while having wine, Tyrion admits to Daenerys that he traveled to Meereen because Lord Varys convinced him that she may very well be the best monarch for the Seven Kingdoms. He believes that Varys was correct in his assessment, and notes that Varys is the only person he can trust, aside from his brother Jaime. The mention of Jaime, who killed her father, prompts Daenerys to suggest executing Tyrion. However, Tyrion reacts with indifference, claiming that he was ready to drink himself to death in Pentos and still welcomes death if Daenerys prefers it, given the rate of how his own life had become as of late. Daenerys ultimately decides not to kill or banish Tyrion, but to take him as an advisor on how to reclaim the Iron Throne. She assures him that she will stay in Meereen to ensure there is no more slavery but states that Essos is not her home. Tyrion counters that no one will support her in Westeros, but Daenerys idealistically declares that the common people will support her. Tyrion reminds Daenerys that Meereen itself has been in a state of chaos without the combined support of the slave masters and the smallfolk, and extends this to Westeros and its Great Houses. Daenerys stubbornly likens the Great Houses, including her own House Targaryen, to spokes on a wheel: one on top of the others, and on and on, crushing the commoners beneath them in their struggle for supremacy. Tyrion sarcastically warns that others have dreamt of stopping the wheel, but Daenerys clarifies that she isn't planning to stop the wheel, she intends to break it.
In Meereen, Tyrion sits in the royal box at Daznak's Pit alongside Daenerys and her advisors, Missandei and Daario Naharis. Her husband-to-be Hizdahr zo Loraq arrives late, claiming to have been putting the final touches on the arrangements for the fight. As the fight is about to commence Daenerys’ attention returns to the arena when Jorah Mormont, who didn’t leave the city after all, gives the traditional dedication to her. The grand melee begins with six fighters, with Jorah pairing up against a Norvosi long-axe fighter. The Norvosi is able to land several blows against Jorah, eventually knocking him to the ground, however Jorah is eventually able to bury his dagger in the Norvosi's chest. Jorah then finds himself hopelessly outmatched by a Braavosi water dancer and suffers many cuts from his opponent's rapier. During the fight, a Meerenese pit fighter is able to lance his opponent in the chest. The water dancer eventually knocks Jorah to the ground, and is about to deliver a killing blow, but fails to notice the pit fighter who kills him from behind. Jorah then battles the pit fighter and is the last fighter standing. Jorah then stares at Daenerys and suddenly grabs a spear, hurling it at the royal box – embedding itself in a Son of the Harpy, who was sneaking up from behind. The Harpies reveal themselves on every level of the arena and begin slaughtering slave masters and freedmen alike. Hizdahr is also brutally slaughtered. Ser Jorah and Daario quickly evacuate Daenerys from the royal box, while Tyrion rescues Missandei. Finding the exits blocked, the group makes a stand in the center of the pit with remainder of the Unsullied defenders. Seeing they are hopelessly outnumbered, Daenerys takes Missandei's hand and closes her eyes, ready to face her death. At that moment, a loud, draconic screech pierces the air, as Daenerys’ dragon, Drogon, descends upon the arena, flying out of a giant burst of flames. Many of the Harpies scatter in terror as Drogon bites, crushes and mercilessly burns the nearest ones to death. The Harpies then rally enough to attack Drogon with spears, embedding them in the dragon's tough hide. Daenerys hastily makes an effort to remove the spears, prompting Drogon to turn on her with a huge roar. He stops short of attacking her and becomes calm. Trying to get Drogon out of range, Daenerys climbs atop his back and bids him to fly, becoming the first Targaryen dragonrider in over a century. With the Harpies now retreating from attack, Daario, Jorah, Missandei and Tyrion look on in astonishment as Drogon soars away from the city with his dragon queen.
In the aftermath of the attack, Tyrion sits in the throne room with Ser Jorah and Daario Naharis when Missandei introduces him to a soldier of Daenerys’ named Grey Worm, who is recovering from a previous Harpy ambush. As Daenerys has yet to return to Meereen since the attack, Tyrion concludes that since Drogon flew her north, they must head in that direction if they are to find her. Daario questions Tyrion's skills in tracking and combat, deeming him unfit to join in such a dangerous mission. Instead, Daario advises Tyrion to stay in Meereen and rule on Daenerys' behalf, knowing of his political skills from his time as Hand of the King, with Grey Worm enforcing Tyrion's rule with the Unsullied army and Missandei as his interpreter. Before departing, Daario wishes him luck on keeping the city together. Afterwards, Tyrion, from atop the pyramid, Tyrion watches Jorah and Daario depart Meereen to find Daenerys. He is joined by Lord Varys, who playfully teases him for "abandoning" him in Volantis and admits he found him through his network of spies. Varys congratulates Tyrion for winning Daenerys' favor without his assistance. He then alludes to the political instability in Meereen, and the opportunities it presents for Tyrion. Through their bantering, they vow to help each other hold Meereen together in her absence. Tyrion then wholeheartedly admits that he has missed Varys.

season six
With Daenerys still missing and the threat of the Sons of the Harpy still on-going, Tyrion and Lord Varys explore the streets of Meereen disguised as merchants, in an effort to find the Harpies. They believe they can do more at street level than from inside the Great Pyramid. Upon meeting a woman and her baby, Tyrion offers some money to feed her child. Due to his bad Valyrian, however, she refuses, believing Tyrion intends to eat her baby until Varys corrects her. While pondering their predicament and what Daenerys' absence means to the people of Meereen, they witness a Red Priest named Zanrush preaching to some of the former slaves to fight for their own freedom instead of relying on Daenerys. After surmising that the Harpies have a leader, Tyrion and Varys encounter several citizens running away from something. Investigating the disturbance, they are shocked to find that the Sons of the Harpy have burned every ship in the harbor.
Some days later, in the Great Pyramid, Tyrion learns that the Unsullied army, led by Grey Worm, have yet to find who was responsible for burning the Meereenese fleet. Lord Varys then reports that Astapor and Yunkai have fallen back into the slave trade. Missandei also brings to Tyrion’s attention that Daenerys' two other dragons, who remain imprisoned, haven't been eating since their mother left. Tyrion guesses that they are morose because they are in captivity. When Missandei asks how he knows this, he replies, "That's what I do. I drink and I know things.” Tyrion decides to visit the catacombs in order to meet the dragons and free them, knowing they will be better off this way.
Accompanied by Lord Varys, Tyrion then ventures alone into the pitch-dark catacombs and encounters Viserion and Rhaegal for the first time. Despite their initial hostility towards him, Tyrion remains calm, assuring them he is a friend of Daenerys and only wants to help. He manages to quickly earn their trust and unshackle them both, all the while telling them the story from his youth about wanting a dragon for his nameday when asked by his uncle what he'd like for a gift. Tyrion informs of his disappointment when he was met with uproarious laughter from his family and the truth from his father Tywin, that they'd been extinct for a century. After the dragons are freed, Tyrion quickly exits the pit with Varys, then asking the eunuch to punch him in the face the next time he has a crazy idea.
Some time later, Tyrion passes the time by engaging Missandei and Grey Worm in small talk. Tyrion offers to play games with the pair but they are not interested. Before Tyrion can embark on a drinking game, Varys returns and informs them that the Wise Masters of Yunkai, the Good Masters of Astapor, and the Free City of Volantis have been secretly funding the Sons of the Harpy movement. While Grey Worm advocates attacking the cities, Missandei advises against it since that would leave Meereen unprotected. Using this information, Tyrion asks Varys to use his spy network, the little birds, to send them a message.
Several days later, Tyrion, Grey Worm, Missandei and Varys prepare to meet with the Masters representing the slave cities. As the diplomatic mission enters the harbour, Grey Worm advocates using military force, though Tyrion informs him this time they must "make peace with our enemies." When Tyrion explains that he is able to empathize with slaves because of his experience being sold to Yezzan zo Qaggaz, Missandei counters that he has not experienced slavery enough. In the meeting chamber, the emissary from Astapor is revealed to be Tyrion's former slave master Yezzan, alongside the Yunkish Razdal mo Eraz and the Volantene representative Belicho Paenymion. Yezzan remarks at how Tyrion has quickly climbed to the top of the pyramid before then offering to give Daenerys and her allies a large sum of money and ships if they leave Slaver's Bay. When Missandei defends slave liberation, Razdal contends that slavery has existed in the region for centuries. After hearing their offer and reminding them there are other ways to make money, Tyrion proposes a counter-offer. While Meereen would remain a free city, he offers to give the other cities of Slaver's Bay a seven-year time limit to phase out slavery and compensate all slave owners. However, they must end all support for the Sons of the Harpy, regardless of their denial of it. He then cautions them that they will not get a better offer. Afterwards, Tyrion and his entourage are then confronted by a group of former slaves in the throne room. A freedman demands to know when Daenerys will return, while another is appalled at the idea of Tyrion negotiating with slave traders. Tyrion insists he is doing his best to rule the city in her absence, however, the freedmen refuse to listen to the foreign dwarf and look to Grey Worm and Missandei for reassurance. Despite their misgivings, they both publicly back Tyrion in front of the freedmen. In private, Tyrion assures Missandei and Grey Worm that he is serving Daenerys' interest by taking advantage of the Masters' own arrogance, but that they cannot end slavery overnight. Grey Worm, however, warns Tyrion that the slavers cannot be reasoned with and will most likely take advantage of him instead, since they already do this for a living.
Nevertheless, the situation in Meereen begins to slowly stabilize, with almost no incidents involving the freedmen or Harpies, though Tyrion reminds them they need to convince the Meereenese that everything has been done with Daenerys' blessing, as the Masters could use his foreign status against him to fully reclaim Slaver's Bay. To accomplish this, Tyrion invites Kinvara, High Priestess of the Red Temple of Volantis, to negotiate spreading the word of Daenerys' achievements. To Tyrion's surprise, Kinvara appears to fully agree with supporting his goals, believing that Daenerys is ‘The Prince That Was Promised’. Lord Varys is more skeptical, however, being suspicious of any practitioners of magic, and points out that another Red Priestess named Melisandre had already promised the same to Stannis Baratheon, who was ultimately defeated and killed. Kinvara counters that the Lord of Light's human followers occasionally make mistakes, then shuts him down with knowledge of his castration. Kinvara then assures Tyrion that she will send the preachers and priests best suited to the task at hand.
Some weeks later, in the streets of Meereen, the Red Priestesses preach that Daenerys Targaryen has been sent by R'hllor to end slavery. Tyrion and Varys enter the marketplace where they debate the merits of Tyrion's hiring of "fanatics" to keep order in Meereen. Varys then departs on a secret expedition because Daenerys needs friends in Westeros. Before reaching the docks, Varys informs Tyrion that his expedition would not remain secret if he was seen with the most famous dwarf in the city. As he leaves Tyrion corrects him, "The most famous dwarf in the world." Later, in the Great Pyramid, Tyrion wishes to celebrate with Missandei and Grey Worm for the resurgence of Meereen and to honor their queen. Their celebration is cut short when a large fleet of slaver ships lay siege to the city. As the slavers continue to bombard Meereen, Tyrion allows Grey Worm to assume command. Grey Worm proposes that the Unsullied must not go to the beach, preferring to wait until the slavers enter the Great Pyramid. At that moment, they hear movement on the roof. When they go to investigate, they discover that Daenerys has returned with Drogon.
The following morning, Tyrion explains the events in Meereen during her absence to Daenerys. Despite the fact that they are under siege by the Masters' fleet, he believes that his success in bringing about a resurgence of a slaveless Meereen is the reason for their attack, because the Masters could not let such an example succeed for fear that their slaves could rise up. Daenerys declares that she will destroy the masters' armies, kill them all, and destroy their cities. Tyrion disapproves and explains the similarities between this plan and the one her father, King Aerys, had for King's Landing when the Lannisters were at his door. Instead, he proposes a different solution. Accompanied by Grey Worm and Missandei, Tyrion and Daenerys meet with the slave masters Razdal, Yezzan and Belicho to parley. Believing victory is near, the slave masters demand that Daenerys and Tyrion surrender Missandei and the Unsullied to their masters, and her three dragons to be slaughtered before leaving Slaver's Bay. Dany rejects their terms and orders Drogon, Viserion and Rhaegal to burn the slavers' entire fleet. As Daenerys leads the counter-attack on the back of Drogon, Tyrion chastises the slave masters for breaking his pact, demanding that they surrender one of their own to be executed as punishment. When Razdal and Belicho try to offer up Yezzan, Tyrion orders Grey Worm to kill the two masters. However, Yezzan himself is spared so he can spread the word of Daenerys' power. Meanwhile, Daenerys’ newly-recruited Dothraki army wipe out the remaining faction of the Sons of the Harpy.
Some time after the battle, Tyrion is present at the Great Pyramid while Daenerys holds an audience with Theon Greyjoy and his sister Yara, who have just arrived with most of the Iron Fleet. Knowing Theon, Tyrion chides him for mocking his height back at Winterfell and for the alleged murders of Bran and Rickon Stark. A penitent Theon reiterates that he has paid for his crimes though Tyrion is incredulous given that Theon is standing there. Yara offers to provide Daenerys with a hundred ships if she helps them to defeat her uncle Euron Greyjoy and recognizes the independence of the Iron Islands. Tyrion protests that if the Iron Islands gain independence, then the rest of the Kingdoms will likely make that demand as well; Daenerys states that they are welcome to try, and agrees to Yara's terms, provided that the Ironborn end all reaving and piracy of the mainland. When Yara begrudgingly accepts, Tyrion indicates his approval of the alliance, as Daenerys has negotiated a strong position for herself.
In preparation for the invasion of Westeros and entering its politics, Tyrion advises Daenerys to end her relationship with Daario Naharis and leave him to run Meereen with the rest of the Second Son mercenaries, which she accepts as the right course of action. Tyrion attempts to console her on her loss of the relationship but admits he is not good at consoling. She agrees but informs that she is bothered that it was so easy for her to leave Daario. Tyrion tells her that Daario is not the only man she ever loved and definitely will not be the last. He also implies that she already has the needed mindset for the terrifying game she is about to play with the lords of Westeros. Tyrion goes on to admit that for years he has believed in nothing, however, during the months in her service, he has come to believe in Daenerys herself and that he is ready to live again. Touched, Daenerys presents him with a replica of the Hand's brooch and formally names him Hand of the Queen. An emotionally grateful Tyrion kneels before her to accept.
Some time later, out in the open Narrow Sea, Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion soar over the united Targaryen fleet, assembled with the Unsullied, Dothraki and the Ironborn armies. Sailing alongside Daenerys’ large fleet, and strengthening her invasion, are the newly-acquired Westerosi support that Lord Varys has organized with the Dornishmen and Reachmen. Tyrion stands on the deck of the flagship with Daenerys, Varys and Missandei as they looking ahead towards Westeros, bracing themselves for the coming war for the Iron Throne.

season seven
As news of his appointment as Hand of the Queen to Daenerys has reached the capital of King's Landing, Tyrion arrives at Dragonstone after a long voyage across the Narrow Sea. The volcanic island is Daenerys’ birthplace as well as the location of the eponymous castle and ancestral seat of House Targaryen. As the three dragons circle over the castle, Daenerys kneels on the sand and touches Westerosi land for the first time since her birth. She and her entourage then climb the steps to the castle where they silently then enter the unguarded main gates and deserted courtyard. When they enter the castle itself, Daenerys briefly studies the fiery stag on one of Stannis Baratheon’s old banners, as he used to occupy the island before his death. After a moment, Daenerys rips the banner down with a firm tug before entering the throne room and gazes upon the Targaryen throne itself, hewn from volcanic rock. After a moment, Daenerys and Tyrion stride right past the throne and enters the Chamber of the Painted Table, the war council room. Surveying the discarded markers from Stannis' last use of the table, Daenerys wastes no time, turns to Tyrion and remarks "Shall we begin?"
As they commence planning for the continental takeover, Tyrion cautions Daenerys not to launch a direct assault on King’s Landing with her dragons or she will merely become “Queen of the Ashes”, to which Daenerys concurs. Tyrion witnesses as Daenerys calls into question Varys' allegiance, as his loyalty has shifted from king to king since the days when he served her father. The Hand tries to defend his friend, insisting that Varys had been the one to convince him over to their cause and that he had served her well since then, assisting his rule of Meereen and securing the alliance of Dorne and House Tyrell. However, Daenerys demands that Varys explain himself without support from Tyrion, who watches as Varys swears that his loyalty as long as she keeps the people's best interests at heart. Daenerys requests that Varys not conspire against her if she should fail and that he try his hardest to dissuade her. Grey Worm then announces the arrival of the infamous Red Priestess, Melisandre, who brings them news of events in the North, including the bastard Jon Snow's coronation as the King in the North, much to Tyrion's surprise. Although somewhat skeptical of Melisandre's prophecies, Tyrion admits that he liked and trusted Jon's character when they traveled to the Wall together, and he encourages Daenerys to arrange an alliance with him.
Some time later, Tyrion joins Daenerys for a war council with Varys, Missandei, Grey Worm and their newest allies: the Greyjoy siblings, Ellaria Sand and Olenna Tyrell. Tyrion initially clashes with Ellaria, as he is aware that she murdered his niece Myrcella Baratheon with poison in retaliation against the Lannisters for the death of Oberyn Martell. Ellaria still grieves over Oberyn, holding this against Tyrion as it was his trial by combat which resulted in her lover’s death. After Daenerys stops their argument, Tyrion helps her explain their plan to invade Westeros: as his sister Cersei is trying to rally Westerosi lords to defend the capital against a foreign army. Tyrion proposes using a combination of Tyrell and Dornish forces to lay siege instead, much to the chagrin of Olenna and Ellaria, who balk at the thought of using their own soldiers. Tyrion, however, insists that using the Unsullied and Dothraki would arouse the patriotism of Westerosi bannermen and potentially close ranks behind Cersei. He proposes sending Grey Worm and the Unsullied to take Casterly Rock instead, cutting off Cersei's retreat and dealing a massive blow to the morale of the Western army. In the meantime, the Greyjoy fleet will escort Ellaria back to Sunspear to rally the Dornish forces and then ferry them up the coast to King's Landing, bypassing the Stormlands and allowing the siege to commence early. Daenerys accepts Tyrion's proposal and reminds the others on her council that she will not be attacking the capital, requesting consenting approval from everyone, which they give.
Some days later, Tyrion and Missandei stand outside on the beach of Dragonstone as Jon Snow arrives with a small retinue of men as well as Stannis’ former advisor, Davos Seaworth. Tyrion greets Jon, calling him "the bastard of Winterfell", to which Jon retorts, calling Tyrion "the dwarf of Casterly Rock". They greet each other warmly, happy to see each other again after many years, as they exchange friendly barbs back and forth. Jon and his party are then forced to surrender their weapons, though reluctant to do so. Then, as the party is escorted towards the castle, a group of Daenerys' soldiers whisk away their boat. Jon and Davos exchange looks of concern at this. As they make their way up the castle steps, Jon and Tyrion have a conversation about how they got to their respective positions, and how Jon's followers must think he's crazy for going to Dragonstone. Tyrion concurs, stating that if he were Jon's advisor, he would have advised against it, and cites that going south doesn't usually work out well for the Starks, to which Jon swiftly replies that he is not a Stark. They are then suddenly interrupted when Drogon swoops down towards them, and everyone is forced to duck for cover. An awestruck Jon takes a moment to recover, as the party continues on their journey towards the castle. As they reach the throne room, Jon and Davos begin to speak with Daenerys as Tyrion watches by her side. The meeting is very tense as both sides refuse to submit to the other's demands. Tyrion plays an important moderating role by vouching for Jon's integrity and character, helping to soften Daenerys' attitude towards the insistent and unbowing King in the North. Getting to the point of his trip, Jon likens the fighting between the Great Houses to children squabbling over a game. Jon points out that the army of the dead are their true enemy. Daenerys is skeptical, but Tyrion vouches for Jon. When Daenerys reiterates that she is destined to rule the Seven Kingdoms, Jon retorts that she will be ruling over a graveyard if the Night King is not defeated. As the meeting is about to end on an unfavorable note, Tyrion urges Jon to bend the knee, reasoning that if Westeros is doomed by the threat of White Walkers, it makes no difference who he supports for the throne, especially if it will help him further his goals. Tyrion insists they cannot split their forces. Ser Davos says that it doesn't matter who bends the knee, as if they don't put aside their enmities to focus on the undead they will all die, but Tyrion doesn't see the point of Jon's refusal to submit. When Jon disputes Daenerys' claims to queenship, she responds that he is in open rebellion since he has declared himself King in the North. Lord Varys enters to provide Daenerys with an update as she then orders Missandei to give Jon and his followers food and lodging. When Jon asks if he is a prisoner, she says "not yet", as he then exits with Davos. Varys then informs her and Tyrion that Yara Greyjoy’s fleet was ambushed by her uncle Euron's fleet in the Narrow Sea. He gravely adds that Yara and Ellaria Sand have been captured.
Later, Jon discusses his predicament with Tyrion as he is unhappy to be held at Dragonstone while the White Walkers still pose a threat. Jon then asks Tyrion how he can convince people about the existence of something they don't believe exist. Tyrion encourages Jon not to give up. When Jon remarks that he is a fool for going south, Tyrion reassures him that the Mad King's daughter is not her father and has protected people from "monsters," telling him to speak with her servants. Tyrion then asks if there is something he can do to help Jon. After learning about the existing dragonglass in the caves beneath Dragonstone, Tyrion speaks with Daenerys about Jon's request to access the material, as the glass has proven to be effective in killing White Walkers. Despite being preoccupied with the loss of the Greyjoy and Dornish allies, Tyrion convinces Daenerys to let Jon have the dragonglass in order to court his allegiance, advising her to give him something so that they can focus on Casterly Rock. Afterwards, Daenerys herself informs Jon of the allowance of mining dragonglass.
Afterwards, in the Chamber of Painted Table, Daenerys confers with Tyrion, Lord Varys and Missandei. She proposes going out with her dragons to hunt Euron Greyjoy's Iron Fleet, but Missandei and Tyrion argue against it: they have no idea where Euron is, and all it would take is for one stray arrow to kill Daenerys and the dragons would be uncontrollable without their mother. Tyrion also assumes that the Lannisters will put up a fierce fight for Casterly Rock, adding that the gates and walls of the ancestral castle of his House is impregnable to siege. However, as his father Tywin assigned Tyrion to build the sewers in his youth, he informs them that he built a secret tunnel through a cove to bring in prostitutes, which now can be used to their advantage. Meanwhile, however, in the Westerlands, Tyrion’s plans are foiled. The Unsullied do manage to sneak in through Tyrion's secret cove tunnel and after following an initial fight, they overwhelm the garrison and capture the castle. Grey Worm, however, quickly realizes that the Lannisters have only installed a small, skeletal garrison. Overlooking the battlements, Grey Worm questions a wounded Lannister soldier about where the main Lannister forces are, realizing they’ve stumbled into a trap. Euron's Iron Fleet sneaks up on the Unsullied fleet from behind and unleashes projectiles, setting many Targaryen ships ablaze.
Upon receiving word, Tyrion then informs Daenerys that the Unsullied succeeded in capturing Casterly Rock, only to then reveal the Lannister ambush at Highgarden, that resulted in the death of Olenna Tyrell and with it the official extinction of House Tyrell. As Tyrion's military strategy quickly falls apart, a furious Daenerys struggles to keep her temper, as now all three of her major allies in Westeros are gone and all she has gained is a castle with no supplies. She blames his cautious strategy for losing them Dorne, Yara’s Ironborn men and now the Reach. However, Tyrion insists that they still have just enough ships left to at least shuttle the Dothraki from Dragonstone to the nearby mainland coast; even with the loss of all her other allies, her combined Unsullied and Dothraki forces are still the largest single army in Westeros. Daenerys fumes that her vast numbers are useless if she can't feed them all, as that was the Reach's true strategic value, given their wealth. Daenerys decides she has had enough of clever plans, declaring she will use the Dothraki and her dragons in a direct assault on the Red Keep to destroy her enemies. Tyrion urges her against this and when Daenerys asks Jon Snow for his input, Jon insists that if she attacks she’d be no different than any other tyrannical leader.
Tyrion joins Daenerys, who instead decides to attack the Lannister army, who are en route to King's Landing following their victory at Highgarden. She rides in on Drogon and the full force of the Dothraki horde who stampede towards the Lannister men, led by Tyrion’s brother Jaime and also including Ser Bronn. Tyrion is present in the distance as the attack commences and looks gravely out towards the battlefield, realizing that these are in fact his own countrymen from the Westerlands and House Lannister that are being massacred. Men who Tyrion had previously fought alongside at the Battles of the Green Fork and Blackwater. Scores of burning and dying men rush to the river to try to extinguish the dragon flames. The Dothraki, who live for combat, show the fleeing Westerosi no mercy and cut them down gleefully on and off horseback. Bronn readies a scorpion launcher that is specifically designed for dragons, awaiting for Drogon to approach close enough and as he then precisely fires, impaling Drogon's right shoulder. The mighty dragon lets out an awful screech and collapses in shock, helplessly dropping into a free-fall from hundreds of feet in the air. When Jaime sees that Daenerys has been grounded and immobilized with the dazed Drogon, he realizes he still has a chance to end her invasion. Jaime grabs a spear and charges his horse across the flaming battlefield to make a death-run for Daenerys as she tends to Drogon’s wound in a panic. From afar, Tyrion swears under his breath, calling his brother a "fucking idiot", angry that he's going to get himself killed. Just as Jaime is nearly on top of Daenerys, however, Drogon notices him amidst the chaos of the battle. Shielding Daenerys behind his head, the dragon opens his mouth and his throat glows with the promise of fiery death. Just as Drogon unleashes the flames, Bronn rides in and tackles Jaime off his horse, leaving their poor mounts to be consumed instead. They both fall into the river, where Jaime is weighed down by his armor, and sinks beneath the waters, in danger of drowning. In the aftermath of the battle, Jaime and Bronn have swam ashore to safety and elsewhere Tyrion examines the damage on the battlefield and is present when Daenerys offers the surviving Lannister and House Tarly men a choice: kneel or die. When Randyll Tarly refuses, Tyrion is quick to point out Randyll's newfound loyalty to Queen Cersei, despite her role in annihilating House Tyrell. Randyll, in turn, denounces Tyrion and his loyalty to Daenerys, viewing her as a foreign invader. Despite Tyrion's insistence that Randyll and his son Dickon Tarly be imprisoned or exiled to the Night’s Watch, Daenerys ignores his advice, explaining that they already made their choice. She orders Drogon to burn them alive.
Back at Dragonstone, after the surprise return of Ser Jorah Mormont, who has been cured of his greyscale infection, Tyrion and Lord Varys talk about the deaths of Randyll and Dickon Tarly. Varys tells Tyrion about how he had distanced himself from the Mad King's role in killing Rickard Stark and his son Brandon Stark. Tyrion continues to insist that Daenerys is not her father, and Varys agrees up to a point: she may not have her father's madness, but she certainly has a growing ruthless streak, which in Varys' view must be curtailed by Tyrion's more sensible and pragmatic counsel. They then discuss a sealed scroll that contains a message from Bran Stark's at Winterfell – which Varys has already read. Afterwards, discussing the scroll at a council meeting, Jon informs Daenerys of the news of his half-siblings Bran and Arya Stark's return to Winterfell. He asserts wanting to return home to Winterfell, concerned by Bran's warning of the army of the dead closing in on the Wall. Daenerys notes that Jon doesn't have enough men to fight the army of the dead as Jon then asks her again to join him. However, Daenerys is worried that Cersei will take advantage of the situation if she turns her focus to the army of the dead. Tyrion then proposes bringing a wight south to King's Landing in order to prove that the army of the dead is real in order to convince his sister and hopefully come to a truce. Varys opines that it is suicide trying to appeal to Cersei but Tyrion argues that he can persuade his brother Jaime to assist. It’s noted that Ser Davos, a former smuggler, might be the only one who can sneak Tyrion into the capital, who reluctantly agrees, but also thinks such a mission is risky even for him. Ser Jorah then volunteers to go beyond the Wall to help capture a wight while Jon volunteers to lead the expedition, since the wildlings won't follow Jorah and he is the only one who has the most experience facing their enemy. Upset over the idea of Jon leaving, Daenerys responds that she did not give him permission to leave but Jon reminds her that he is the King in the North. He tells her she has the power of life and death over him but that he trusted her even regardless of being a stranger. Jon pleads with her to return the favor by now trusting him.
Some time after sailing to the capital, Tyrion and Davos arrive at a secluded beach close to the Red Keep. Tyrion remarks that he murdered his own father the last time he was here, with Davos coolly remarking that Tyrion murdered his son Matthos the last time he himself visited the city, reminding Tyrion of the wildfire he used against Stannis’ fleet during the Battle of Blackwater. A meeting is then arrange by Tyrion and Bronn in the cellar beneath the Red Keep as Bronn leads a surprised Jaime to meet with his brother. Jaime is initially furious that Bronn has arranged the secret meeting. Tyrion compliments Jaime on shrewdly and unsentimentally abandoning the Lannister seat of Casterly Rock, while Jaime wishes him dead for killing their father Tywin. An emotional Tyrion points out that their father knew he was innocent but still condemned him to death nonetheless. When Jaime demands to know what Tyrion wants, he responds that Jaime understands Daenerys will win the war, however, Daenerys is willing to make peace with Cersei under certain conditions. He informs Jaime about Daenerys' terms as he then departs back to the beach to re-join Davos. Upon his return, Tyrion spots two Gold Cloaks near their rowboat. Realizing it's too late to turn back inconspicously, Tyrion walks past them to the boat while looking downward. However, one of the guards recognizes Tyrion by his scar and asks him to stop. They realize that he is indeed Tyrion Lannister, and immediately see through Davos' earlier deception. Before either guard can react, Davos’ newly-recruited friend Gendry Baratheon sneaks up with a large hammer axe and swiftly kills them both by smashing their skulls in. Davos, slightly exasperated, then introduces the bastard of King Robert Baratheon to Tyrion, who wryly observes "he'll do,” as the trio begin their journey back to Dragonstone.
Upon their return to Dragonstone, Gendry is introduced to Jon Snow and offers his assistance for the wight hunt. On the shore, Tyrion and Daenerys wait for Jon and the rest of his hunting party, including Jorah Mormont, as they prepare to depart on boats for Eastwatch-by-the-Sea, one of only three manned castles that remain along the Wall. When Jorah arrives Tyrion reminisces with his former traveling companion as he then hands him the coin used to pay for Jorah and himself by the slave-trader Yezzan, hoping it will bring him luck for the wight hunt. After speaking with Tyrion, Daenerys quips to Jorah that they should be used to saying farewell to each other after the numerous occasions, forced or otherwise, in demanding Jorah to leave her. Jon arrives last at the beach as she says goodbye to Jorah. Jon playfully quips to Daenerys that if their mission is unsuccessful and he doesn’t return she at least won’t have to deal with the King in the North anymore. Daenerys responds that she’s "grown used to him,” hinting that she may have feelings for him. Before departing, Jon wishes her good fortune in the wars to come. Tyrion and Daenerys watch as Jon and the hunting party depart on their boats.
Some time later, Tyrion and Daenerys discuss heroism and the likes of Khal Drogo, her deceased Dothraki lover, as well as Daario Naharis, Jorah Mormont and Jon Snow as examples. Tyrion notes that all four of these men fell in love with her as Daenerys insists Jon doesn't love her. Tyrion responds sarcastically saying Jon only stares at her longingly because he is hopeful for a successful military alliance. Daenerys changes the subject, noting that if the wight hunt goes well, she'll finally get to meet Cersei, who wants to kill her. Tyrion notes that Cersei would probably torture her first. He vows that if they go to the capital, they will go with the full capacity of their forces, and if someone even touches her, they'll burn the city to the ground. Daenerys says she's probably planning a trap, but Tyrion notes that Cersei is probably thinking the very same thing about Daenerys. When Daenerys asks him if they should lay a trap, Tyrion says it would be better to build a new world without mass murder. Daenerys remarks that no war was won without it, which Tyrion agrees but states that fear alone isn't the right way of ruling. When Daenerys says that her ancestor, Aegon the Conqueror, got quite a long way with fear, Tyrion reminds her of her promise of breaking the wheel, which Aegon built. He states that he wants to serve Daenerys for the long term, and wants to make sure that, after she is Queen and broken the wheel, it stays broken after her death. Then on the topic of succession he states that Daenerys once said she believes she can't have children, but that there are other ways to name an heir. Daenerys says he's been thinking of her death for quite a while, and angrily reminds him they lost Dorne and Highgarden because of his lack of planning for the short term. Tyrion remains silent as Daenerys says they will discuss her successor after she is Queen.
Daenerys later receives a letter sent by Gendry Baratheon requesting rescue for the hunting party. Tyrion tries to stop her from going to the Wall with her dragons, saying she is the most important person in the world, and she can't go to the most dangerous place in the world. He claims the group knew the risk when they left, and Daenerys shouldn't try to save them. When she steps onto Drogon, she asks him what he would have her do. Tyrion says that doing nothing is the hardest thing to do, but if she dies, everything and everyone would be lost. Daenerys reminds him he told her to do nothing once, and having learned the hard way, she won't do this again. Tyrion looks at her as she and her dragons dive off the cliff, heading for the wall. Later on, after a devastating loss of Daenery’s dragon Viserion at the hands of the leader of the White Walkers, Jon and Ser Jorah return with her to Dragonstone to report in their success of taking a living wight from beyond the Wall to present to Cersei in the capital.
After Queen Cersei agrees to a summit meeting in King's Landing, Tyrion and Jon arrive in the capital days later with their various allies, while the Unsullied and Dothraki amass outside the city walls to attack in case the truce gets broken. In the harbor, Tyrion, Lord Varys, Jon, Davos and Missandei nervously sail past Euron Greyjoy's fleet. The group arrives and are escorted to the Dragonpit, the location of the summit. Tyrion reconnects with Ser Bronn, who concedes it is good to see him again. The pair then greet Podrick Payne, who had arrived earlier with Brienne of Tarth, a warrior and sworn protector the Stark children. Tyrion reminds Podrick that he is no longer a Westerosi noble after killing Lord Tywin and informs Bronn that he will always pay more than what his sister will in return for his service. Bronn rebuffs this, stating that if anything goes wrong during the parley, Cersei will have Bronn to thank for delivering her enemies to King's Landing. When Cersei arrives, she glares hatefully towards Tyrion and quickly grows impatient with Daenerys’ late arrival, only for the dragon queen herself to make a dramatic entrance on Drogon moments later. Once the various factions are all seated, Tyrion and Jon attempt to convince the Lannister queen of the greater threat coming from the North; according to Tyrion, one million people all live crammed together in the city. They will soon become one million more soldiers in the army of the dead. Cersei callously responds that it will likely be an improvement for most of them, her flippancy noticeably angering the normally stoic Jon. Although Daenerys promises to uphold a truce with the Lannisters until the Night King has been dealt with, Cersei dismisses their claim concerning the dead, saying they are simply attempting to strengthen their position while she is standing down. Tyrion replies that they have something to show her, as Sandor Clegane then brings out the wight that was captured beyond the Wall. After Jon then demonstrates how to efficiently kill a wight when he stabs it with dragonglass. Shaken by what she has witnessed, Cersei at first seems willing to accept a truce, but only if Jon Snow agrees to have the North remain neutral and support neither Cersei nor Daenerys. To everyone’s surprise and Tyrion's dismay, Jon replies that he cannot do so, as he has already bent the knee for Daenerys. In response, Cersei leaves the summit. Furious, Tyrion rebukes Jon for not being able to make a small lie in order to secure them a political and military advantage. Despite Daenerys’ protests that she will have him murdered - Tyrion declares that he will go and speak with Cersei alone or else they will be right back where they started.
Tyrion is escorted by Gregor Clegane and meets with Cersei inside the same office both he and their father once occupied, as Hand of the King. Cersei accuses him of having tried to bring down House Lannister from the very beginning. Although she finally acknowledges that Tyrion did not kill Joffrey, she reminds him that he did kill their father, and holds him responsible for the deaths of her other children, as she believed no one would have touched Tommen or Myrcella if Tywin had been alive. Tyrion expresses sincere regret for the deaths of his nephew and niece, but Cersei does not care, claiming he destroyed their House's future regardless of his intentions. Angered, Tyrion tries to goad her into having him killed, if she blames him for everything that has befallen her. Cersei looks ready to give the order to Ser Gregor, but reluctantly relents. Tyrion wonders why she allowed him to arrange the peace negotiations in the first place if she didn't expect anything to happen; Cersei turns the question back at him, wondering why he supports Daenerys as loyally as he does. Cersei dismisses Tyrion's assertions that Daenerys is better at controlling her violent impulses than she is. She expresses the horror she felt when she saw the wight, and her desire to keep her loved ones safe from them at any cost. From this and her gestures, Tyrion correctly deduces that she is pregnant with another incestuous child by Jaime. Tyrion then returns to his allies at the Dragonpit, where they are joined shortly after by his brother and sister. Cersei claims she will agree to the truce and send the Lannister forces north to fight alongside the Starks and the Targaryens.
Some time later, Tyrion, Daenerys and her advisors return to Dragonstone and meet back in the war room to discuss logistics. It will take the Dothraki a fortnight to reach Winterfell, and the plan is to have Jon and the Unsullied cross the sea by ship and meet them at White Harbor. Ser Jorah points out that the North is not really safer for her than anywhere else, suggests that she fly to Winterfell. Jon then counters that Daenerys ride with them so that the North can see her as a liberator and as an ally. After a moment's consideration, Daenerys decides to sail to Winterfell with Jon. Afterwards, Tyrion accompanies his Queen and Jon Snow aboard a ship that will take them to White Harbor. On the voyage, as Tyrion goes to visit Daenerys in her quarters, he witnesses her inviting Jon into her cabin, where the two of them give in to their mutual attraction and engage in a sexual encounter. Tyrion then grows concerned with the possible political consequences of this new union.

season eight
Some weeks later, after a long journey, Tyrion travels north and reaches Winterfell by carriage whom he shares with Lord Varys. Tyrion cheekily comments about Varys’ lack of balls not freezing in the cold in comparison to their warmer climate in the south. The entire Targaryen force arrives alongside Daenerys and Tyrion in order to assist the North in the war against the army of the dead. Welcomed with a cold reception by the smallfolk of Winter Town, Jon tells Daenerys he had warned her that Northerners are wary of outsiders, and when Drogon and Rhaegal soar above the small village outside of Winterfell, the people flee in fear.
Immediately upon arrival, the Northern lords meet with Jon, Daenerys and Tyrion in Winterfell’s great hall to discuss the impending battle. As Jon tries to organize the defense against the undead, House Mormont leader, young Lyanna Mormont, voices her anger that many lords share towards Jon bending the knee to Daenerys since they named him their King in the North. Jon gravely answers that he said he would protect the North, and the only way they could do that is with allies. Tyrion speaks up to insist that they'd all be dead already without Jon - and that the remaining Lannister army will soon arrive to reinforce them as well, upon which the lords resume their objections. Tyrion insists they must fight together in the face of the onslaught of the White Walkers and their undead army. The Lady of Winterfell, Sansa Stark, then asks how they are meant to feed Daenerys' army, "While I ensured our stores would last through winter, I didn't account for Dothraki, Unsullied and two full-grown dragons.” She scoffs, "What do dragons eat, anyway?" to which Daenerys quips, "Whatever they want”.
After the meeting, Tyrion encounters Sansa standing above the courtyard. Though they are still technically married until an allument is arranged, it is standard in Westerosi culture that a union is void if unconsummated. This is the first time Tyrion has seen Sansa since she fled from King’s Landing during Joffrey's wedding and whisked away by Littlefinger during the chaos. Tyrion notes that it made Joffrey’s murder look more incriminating for him that his wife, Sansa, fled right after the assassination. She counters by reminding Tyrion that they both survived the ordeal in the end. After discussing the soon-to-arrive Lannister army, Sansa points out that she used to think he was “the cleverest man alive”, but he now is foolish to put his trust in his sister Queen Cersei. Shortly thereafter, viewing Jon and Daenerys happily talking outside the grounds of the castle, Tyrion, Varys and Davos observe them from a distance. Davos remarks that a marriage between the two might help cement their alliance.
The following day, Tyrion’s brother Jaime arrives at Winterfell and stands before Daenerys in the great hall. She begins by saying that when she was a child, her brother Viserys Targaryen would tell her a bedtime story about Jaime, the man who murdered their father King Aerys. Daenerys also remarks to him that Cersei had pledged to send her army north, but that all she sees is “one man with one hand,” appearing that Cersei has lied with regards to her support. Jaime makes it clear that she lied to him as well, adding that she never had any intention of sending her army. Tyrion tries to step in but Daenerys quickly stops him as Tyrion misjudged his sister as well. However, when Brienne of Tarth steps forward she vouces for Jaime as a man of honor. She then looks to Sansa and adds that without Jaime, she wouldn't be alive. Sansa eventually agrees that they should let Jaime stay and Jon asserts that they need every man they can get. Daenerys eventually acquiesces and she exits the meeting with Tyrion, Jorah and Varys, venting her anger about Cersei's betrayal. Both Daenerys and Tyrion equally agree that he was a fool in this matter. She informs Tyrion that if he can’t help get her on the Iron Throne, she'll find another Hand who can.
Later on, while Tyrion is walking about the castle grounds, Jaime approaches him. After greeting each other, one of the Stark military men spits down near the Lannister brothers, where Tyrion replies "and the masses rejoice". Jaime asks Tyrion what the Northern people think of their new Queen. After reminding Jaime that Daenerys is his new queen as well, he remarks the people remember what happened the last time Targaryens brought dragons north. He also states they'll come around once they see Daenerys is different. Jaime asks his brother if he is sure about her, as Tyrion assures him. Jaime then states that Daenerys didn't seem to be sure of Tyrion himself, to which Tyrion says that he doesn't blame her for his miscalculation of Cersei. During their conversation, however, Tyrion finds out that Cersei's pregnancy wasn't one of her lies after all. Jaime tells Tyrion to not be too hard on himself, and that Cersei has fooled him more than anybody. Tyrion states that Cersei never fooled him, adding that Jaime always knew exactly what she was and he loved her anyway. Tyrion then informs that he never imagined he'd die at Winterfell, bringing a past joke between the two of exactly how Tyrion pictured himself dying. As Tyrion is finding some black humor in the prospect that being killed by the undead will deny Cersei the satisfaction of having him killed, Jaime is distracted. His brother walks away to look out in the distance at Brienne, who is overseeing sword training in the yard.
As night falls, the defenders gather to make their plans for the battle to come. Jon notes that even with weapons of dragonglass and Valyrian steel, and the defenses they have laid, the army of the dead outnumbers the living too heavily for them to have a chance at winning a conventional battle. When Jaime asks what they can do, Jon suggests they target the Night King, as he is the army’s leader. Bran Stark then interjects that the Night King will come for him, as he's tried to kill the Three-Eyed Raven many times before. Bran explains that the Night King's ultimate desire is to erase all memory of the world of men, something which he now possesses as the raven. Theon Greyjoy declares that he and his men will defend Bran, as atonement for his capture of Winterfell years ago. When Tyrion enquires how the Night King will know where to find him, Bran reveals the claw marks left on him during their last encounter, which allows the creature to track him wherever he is. Tyrion declares that he and Davos will signal Jon and Daenerys at the right time to ignite the trench around Winterfell, but Daenerys overrides him, declaring he will be in the crypts for his own safety; if the battle is won, she will need him. After everyone leaves the meeting, Tyrion pulls up a chair next to the crippled Bran, showing interest in how the young boy he met years ago grew up to become the raven.
That evening, with the army of the dead sure to arrive within hours, Tyrion and Jaime are drinking near the large fireplace in the main hall of Winterfell castle. At one point Tyrion says he'd love to see their father Tywin’s face when they decided to defend Winterfell. Podrick and Brienne then join them for a drink. Eventually Davos arrives to warm himself by the fire, as does a wildling named Tormund. The subject eventually turns to Knighthood, and Tormund, unsure of the concept of becoming a knight, asks Brienne why she isn't one - she simply replies, “tradition”. Jaime then states that any knight can make a knight. At first, Brienne isn't sure what to do, but after looking at Podrick, who gives her the faintest of smiles and a nod, she stands and moves away from the group so that she can kneel. Bringing his sword with him, Jaime gives Brienne her knighthood, before adding “arise Brienne of Tarth, a Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”. While they are all clapping for her, she stands and gives a tearful smile to the small group in the room. Their merriment is then interrupted by the horn blows signalling the arrival of the army of the dead. A panicked Tyrion is joined on the rooftop by Jon and Daenerys, who then quickly run off to prepare for battle.
Outside in the courtyard and moments before the battle ensues, Tyrion takes several wine casks from the provisions to take with him down to the crypts below, where the all of the non-combatants are hiding out. Once inside the crypts, Sansa later joins the rest in hiding and Tyrion laments that he should at least be up on the battlements, even if he can't fight well, just like at the Battle of the Blackwater. Tyrion carries on to say that he and Lord Varys, who has also joined them in the crypts, could still use their great intellects as commanders, to try and see something other people wouldn't. Sansa chides that witty remarks won't make a difference, and the bravest thing they can do now is "look the truth in the face.” Tyrion is moved and quips that maybe they should have stayed married - to which Sansa responds, "You were the best of them." Tyrion remarks that is a terrifying thought. Sansa continues saying that a marriage wouldn't work out between them due to his loyalty to Daenerys, and Tyrion’s division between herself and Daenerys would be a problem. Increasingly frustrated and within earshot of their conversation, Missandei defends her queen to Sansa, firmly stating that without Daenerys they would all be dead by now.
Later, as the battle continues outside, the castle has now been overrun with the undead army. Tyrion, Sansa, Varys, Missandei and the others can hear a handful of men desperately pounding on the heavy doors to let them in, but they know they cannot risk a flood of wights passing their barricade. They hear the men's cries which are then quickly silenced. The wights themselves cannot find a way in, however, there are already plenty of dead bodies in the crypts for the Night King to resurrect, a special power of his. Suddenly, many of the interred corpses rise as wights and start clawing their way out of their tombs. As more corpses have risen from their tombs many of the living inhabitants inside the crypts are unarmed women and children, many whom succumb to their deaths. Sansa and Tyrion hide behind one tombs terrified. They contemplate on helping the women and children in the fight against the newly made wights in the crypt, with the dragon glass that they were given. They break away from their hideout and scurry around frantically until they see Missandei moments away from being attacked by two wights. Tyrion and Sansa sneak up from behind and kill them both with dragonglass. Shortly thereafter, in the midst of the attack on the crypts, all of the reanimated bodies drop to the ground and fall apart signifying that the Night King and his army of the dead have been defeated, thus ending the great war and the battle of Winterfell.
Following the battle, Winterfell has been cleared of the thousands of corpses in and around it. The fallen are gathered into dozens of funeral pyres and Jon gives a eulogy in front of the survivors stating that it is their duty to keep those who have fallen alive in memory for generations to come. Quoting the funeral speech used for members of the Night's Watch, Jon then announces that they were the shields that guarded the realms of men, and they will never see their like again: “now their watch is ended.” The assembled leaders go forward with torches to light the funeral pyres: Sansa weeps over Theon Greyjoy's body as a heartbroken Daenerys lights Jorah Mormont's pyre. Tyrion witnesses her extreme grief in saying goodbye to Jorah, her longest and most dedicated lieutenant, as well as dealing with his own fond memories of Jorah.
That night, the survivors hold a victory feast in the great hall of Winterfell, though so many died that the mood is somber at first. Eventually the mood is lightened, no doubt with assistance of ale and wine, and the hall becomes more celebratory, as everyone starts boasting about their deeds in the battle. Tyrion talks to Davos, who tells him about the Red Priestess Melisandre's death: he was going to kill her, but she then sacrificed herself as her part to play in the war was completed and she was ready to move on from this life. Tyrion then speaks to Bran Stark, pointing out that as Ned Stark's last trueborn son he should be the lawful heir to Winterfell and the North - but Bran says he won't ever be a lord now, as he’s become the magical three-eyed raven and removed from human affairs. Tyrion says he envies Bran for his powers, but Bran says he wouldn't - he mostly just lives in memories of the past now. He then joins Jaime, Brienne and Pod to play a drinking game. Brienne correctly guesses that Tyrion was married to someone else before his forced marriage to Sansa. Tyrion then drunkenly guesses that Brienne has never slept with anyone. Brienne doesn't answer, awkwardly gets up, and says she must relieve herself as Jaime follows her. Tyrion later finds out that Jaime beds her that evening.
The next day, Daenerys, Jon, and their remaining leaders hold a war council around a large map of Westeros. Apart from the destruction of most of the Dothraki, Grey Worm says that about half of the Unsullied were killed in the battle; Jon says that about half of the Northern and the Vale of Arryn armies were destroyed as well. Varys updates them on the situation in the south using map markers: the Golden Company mercenaries have just arrived in King's Landing, delivered by Euron Greyjoy's fleet, reinforcing Cersei Lannister's position. Daenerys says that they must attack King's Landing, and rip out Cersei root and stem. Tyrion warns her that a direct assault on King's Landing would result in so many civilian casualties that it would make the smallfolk hate her, and they must once again try to encircle Cersei - starving out the city until the commoners revolt against her. Sansa counters that they are not in a strong position to immediately mount a new full-scale offensive but Daenerys insists that the longer she waits, the more time Cersei has to gather new strength and new allies, just as she recruited Euron and the Golden Company. Jon interjects that the North will honor its allegiance to Queen Daenerys, whom he has bent the knee to, and they will just have to leave the badly wounded back home and march south with a smaller army. It is decided that Jon and Davos will lead all of the surviving Northmen/Vale forces and the bulk of the surviving Dothraki/Unsullied forces south down the Kingsroad, while a smaller force of Unsullied return via ship from White Harbor to Dragonstone, island along with Daenerys and her two remaining dragons. From Dragonstone, just across Blackwater Bay from King's Landing, Daenerys can blockade Cersei by sea and ultimately stage a final attack. Daenerys declares to the war council that this will be the last war they have to fight in the Seven Kingdoms - adding "ALL of them.”
Later that night, the Lannister brothers are drinking down the road at a local inn at Winter Town. Jaime has told Tyrion of his new relationship with Brienne, and the very drunk Tyrion says he's happy that now he can finally be the one mocking a brother for being with a taller woman. They are then interrupted by the sudden arrival of Ser Bronn, who was sent by Cersei to kill both her brothers. Tyrion has his nose busted by Bronn who hesitates to kill them, believing Daenerys still has a good chance of winning, and states he has been promised Riverrun as a reward. Tyrion reminds him of his promise to double the price anyone paid to murder him, and promises to make him the Lord of Highgarden after the war, upon which he relents.
The next morning Sansa stands on the castle walls and gazes at Daenerys's dragons flying in the distance. Visibly teary-eyed, as Tyrion approaches, Sansa asks, "Why her?" - but Tyrion insists that Daenerys will be a good queen. Sansa wonders what Tyrion is worried about as their armies are going down south and Daenerys still has her dragons. She anxiously says she doesn't want Jon to go to King's Landing, because the men of her family "don't do well there" as her father, grandfather and uncle were all killed in the capital. Tyrion weakly says he believes in her, but with a pained look, Sansa then asks him what he'd say if there was "someone else, someone better?" She then informs him of Jon’s true parentage as a Targaryen, whom Jon himself has just recently discovered, as well as Daenerys.
Later on as Daenerys' fleet sails south towards Dragonstone, Tyrion meets with Lord Varys in a chamber below deck, having just repeated what Sansa told him: Jon Snow is really Aegon Targaryen, the secret legitimate son of Daenerys' older brother Rhaegar Targaryen and Eddard Stark’s sister Lyanna Stark. As a male Targaryen, this makes Jon the rightful heir to the Iron Throne. They wonder what would happen if the truth came out: Varys acknowledges that the North would obviously switch support to Jon as the rightful heir, and Sansa would make sure that the Vale would as well - instantly losing Daenerys two of the Seven Kingdoms. Tyrion asks why they don't just pursue the easy solution: a marriage-alliance. Varys rebukes that Daenerys is Jon's aunt, though Tyrion counters by pointing out that incestuous marriages never deterred a Targaryen before. Varys insists, however, that as Jon grew up in the North he would never agree to it. Varys then adds that he is concerned about Daenerys' state of mind and growing isolation. Meanwhile, above deck, Dragonstone appears on the horizon as Daenerys soars over the fleet on her dragon Drogon, accompanied by Rhaegal. Daenerys is happy to catch sight of her birthplace, but her joy turns to horror as a gigantic scorpion bolt appears out of nowhere, burying itself deep in Rhaegal's chest: Euron Greyjoy's fleet is mounting a surprise attack, his ships now equipped with huge ballistas. These new weapons are much more powerful, punching deep through Rhaegal's iron-hard scales. The first bolt in his chest is soon followed by a second to his wing. The injured dragon's blood-curdling roar of agony is silenced when a third bolt impales him through the throat. Overwhelmed by shock and blood loss, Rhaegal plunges into the sea, where he sinks beneath the surface of the water and drowns. Distraught and enraged, Daenerys tries to make an attack run on Euron's ship with Drogon, but the numerous ballistas start raining bolts at her, and she barely manages to turn away and escape with her life. Euron's ships then target Daenerys' fleet, decimating them to splinters. Tyrion only manages to survive by jumping overboard, where he is hit in the head and passes out. Some time later, the survivors of the destroyed fleet drag their way onto the nearby shore of Dragonstone, including Tyrion and Varys. A panicked Grey Worm runs around the beach yelling for Missandei, who hasn’t surfaced to shore as she’s been kidnapped by Euron’s men and taken to King’s Landing.
Some time later at Dragonstone, the furious and bereaved Daenerys meets with her remaining advisors in the Chamber of the Painted Table. As he grieves for his endangered lover, Grey Worm grimly says they should storm the capital city at once. Varys, however, believes this to be a mistake, as Cersei has not kept it a secret from them they she has swelled the city with refugees to use as human shields. Varys pleads that trying to remove Cersei's tyranny like this would itself be an act of tyranny, and turn the people of Westeros against her. Daenerys says she knows her purpose in this world, to remove tyrants, and she will tear out Cersei root and stem.
After the meeting, Tyrion and Varys meet alone in the throne room. Varys outright questions if Daenerys is fit to rule, and if perhaps Jon Snow would make a better monarch. Tyrion weakly tries to argue that Daenerys has to be strong, and instill fear in her enemies and pointedly asks if he thinks Daenerys will accede. Varys silently shoots him a look, implying that he means they should assassinate her if she chooses to attack King's Landing. Horrified, Tyrion can only mutter that Daenerys will make the right choice.
After departing Dragonstone, a small contingent of the Unsullied then escort Daenerys, Tyrion, Varys and Grey Worm to King’s Landing, as they approach one of the gates of the capital. They see that the defenses have been drastically improved: each of the city wall towers now has one of the improved anti-dragon ballista weapons. Drogon, Daenerys' last remaining dragon, hangs back behind them on the ground, stalking back and forth in anger. Queen Cersei stands atop the gatehouse, with Euron Greyjoy, Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane and Missandei, who has been bound in chains. Tyrion approaches the gate to parley as Cersei's archers get ready to shoot him, but after a long pause of consideration Cersei motions for them to stand down. Desperate, Tyrion begs that she is not the monster she thinks she is, and that her one redeeming feature has always been her love for her children. He insinuates that Cersei might prefer to go down in flames dragging Daenerys with her, but it would be condemning her unborn baby to death as well. Although Cersei does pause to think on it, she then quietly tells Missandei that if she has any last words, now is the time. Defiant, Missandei shouts "Dracarys!" (the command for dragon-fire). With a nod from Cersei, the hulking Gregor decapitates Missandei with a single swing of his sword, her body and separated head falling onto the ground below. Missandei’s lover Grey Worm is horrified, turning his face away. Daenerys, seething with rage, silently turns away and withdraws from the city.
Tyrion then returns to Dragonstone along with an increasingly enraged Daenerys. When Jon then later returns to the island, Tyrion overhears Varys pleading with him to take the Iron Throne. Tyrion then meets with Daenerys in Dragonstone's war room, where she has been holed up for days. When she surmises to him that someone has betrayed her, Tyrion confirms this and Daenerys names Jon Snow. However, he corrects her with the admission that it was actually Varys. Daenerys confirms Varys knows the truth about Jon and tells Tyrion that he told Varys, "You learned from Sansa. And she learned from Jon, though I begged him not to tell her," and thus feels Jon has betrayed her. Tyrion says he needs to be aware of this information so that he and Varys can be prepared for anything Daenerys might face, but Daenerys is suspicious of Sansa's motives for telling Tyrion. He admits it was a mistake to tell Varys without her permission, adding that Sansa told him with trust. Daenerys responds, "She trusted you to spread secrets that could destroy your own queen. And you did not let her down." Tyrion asks for Daenerys' forgiveness, saying they want the better world she wants and their intentions were good, "Varys as much as anyone. But it doesn't matter now." Daenerys replies, "No. It doesn't matter now."
Later that evening, without resistance, Lord Varys is taken outside, where Tyrion, Daenerys and Jon are waiting for him. A distraught Tyrion informs Varys that it was him who told Daenerys. Varys understands, adding that he hopes he is wrong about everything he’s said about her. He bids one more farewell to Tyrion and wistfully says “goodbye, old friend” before Drogon burns him alive. Afterwards, in the throne room, Tyrion consults with Daenerys, who is now ordering Grey Worm and the Unsullied to sack the capital. Tyrion is strongly against it, saying that the innocent citizens are not her enemy. Daenerys counters that the slaves in Meereen had turned against their masters and liberated themselves. Tyrion responds that the smallfolk are afraid of their Queen because Cersei will punish any rebellious acts. As hostages in a tyrant's grip, Tyrion begs her not to burn the city, or thousands of children will die. Daenerys asserts that Cersei is using mercy as a weakness against them, however, mercy is their strength - mercy for the future generations of Westeros, not the present. In a last ditch effort to get through to Daenerys, Tyrion bargains one last time: he will go talk to Cersei and convince her to surrender, "Cersei's followers will abandon her if they know the war is lost. Give them that chance." When he does, he will ring the city's bells, indicating the full, unconditional surrender of Cersei and her army. He pleads with her not to attack unless he's done this deed. Reluctantly, Daenerys agrees. Before Tyrion leaves, she informs her Hand that his brother Jaime was caught by her men trying to get past their lines. She warns him that the next time he fails her, it will be his last.
Some time later, Ser Davos and his men are prepping for the siege outside King's Landing when Jon and Tyrion arrive by boat. Tyrion asks Davos if he can smuggle something specific for him. After persuading the guards surrounding Jaime's tent to allow him entry he enters to see his brother shackled to a post. Tyrion reveals that he smuggled the key to Jaime's shackles and unchains him, saying that he wants him to be the one to go to Cersei and convince her to surrender, saying it will be much easier for him than it would be for Tyrion himself. Tyrion has arranged for a boat that will take both Jaime and Cersei to Pentos so they can happily live out their days, demonstrating his true understanding of the love his brother and sister have for each other. Jaime agrees but argues that Daenerys will kill Tyrion for this, but Tyrion replies that he considers his life a fair exchange if it allows Daenerys to take the city without slaughtering thousands. Tyrion thanks Jaime for everything he has ever done for him before the two brothers share a tearful goodbye.
After travelling overnight by boat, Jon, Tyrion, Davos and the united army, comprised of the Unsullied, Dothraki and Northmen, wait outside the walls of King's Landing, ready for battle. Tyrion tells Jon that when they hear the bells, to call off his men. Meanwhile, scores of citizens from the city have been crowded in the Red Keep to protect them from the coming invasion. Cersei overlooks the city and sees her plan coming to fruition: she intends to keep a vast swath of innocent civilians in the path of the Red Keep, seeing if Daenerys will truly burn the city and all the inhabitants with it.
In Blackwater Bay, Euron Greyjoy and the Iron Fleet wait in silence, when Daenerys, riding atop Drogon, suddenly ambushes them by diving directly out from the sun’s glare. Euron’s fleet fire their scorpions, but are unable to land a hit, for their target is far too fast for them. With his flames the mighty dragon all but destroys the Iron Fleet, though Euron is able to escape by jumping into the sea. As the armies wait at the gates for the bells to ring, Daenerys and Drogon suddenly burst through the gates in a fiery blast, scattering the Golden Company mercenaries. The united army charge the gate and take care of what remains of the Golden Company's men, with a grief-stricken Grey Worm brutally sticking a spear into the back of their leader, Harry Strickland. As the united army take to the streets of King's Landing, obliterating any and all Lannister soldiers in their path, Daenerys and Drogon strafe the city walls, destroying the remaining scorpion weapons. The army then make their way to the gates of the inner-most part of the city, where a blockade of Lannister soldiers are waiting for them. The two opposing armies come to an intense standstill. Daenerys perches Drogon atop one of the walls. Realizing their chances of winning are dwindling fast, the Lannister soldiers throw down their weapons and surrender. Tyrion and Jon are visibly relieved as the battle is seemingly done. The citizens of the city cry out for the bells to be rung. After a long amount of time passes, the bells are finally rung, signaling what appears to be the end of the sack of the city.
While the bells keep ringing, however, Daenerys looks at the Red Keep with a look of pure hatred in her eyes and becomes more and more unstable. Without uttering a single word, Daenerys takes Drogon to the skies, and in a terrifying display of rage, proceeds to burn down the entirety of King's Landing, scorching entire buildings and neighborhoods, killing both soldiers and innocent civilians alike as Tyrion and Jon witness in horror. Grey Worm takes his spear and throws it at a Lannister captain, impaling him through the chest. With that, it becomes the call to arms as the Unsullied and Dothraki begin attacking and killing surrendered forces. Jon is horrified by this action orders his own men back and tries to get them and the Unsullied and Dothraki to stop fighting. Unfortunately, the Northmen are in no mood to be merciful towards House Lannister and join their new allies in the slaughter. Chaos erupts as the Unsullied, Dothraki, and Northmen alike charge into the inner-most parts of the city, killing anyone, soldier or civilian, and raping women they come across. Jon is caught up in the disorder, deflecting attacks and shouting at his men to stop fighting. Jon finds one of the soldiers grabbing an innocent woman and intervenes to stop the soldier from raping her. The soldier attacks Jon and Jon is forced to kill him. Daenerys continues to wreak havoc as Drogon destroys the crumbling Red Keep in a few breaths of his fire, with both Cersei and Jaime still inside the castle. Davos and Jon are reeling at the carnage and fire surrounding them as caches of wildfire explode as they share a look and Jon orders his forces to fall back. He and Davos rush people out of the city as fire rains down upon them from above with the last words of the Mad King, "Burn them all," coming to life at his daughter's hand as King's Landing burns to ashes.
After the destruction of King's Landing, Tyrion, Jon and Davos walk through the ash-covered remains of the city, with charred bodies of civilians and soldiers everywhere. They are shocked at the devastation Daenerys has brought upon the city after Cersei’s surrender. Tyrion leaves them and walks alone towards the Red Keep. Inside he somberly walks around the castle he spent all these years in looking for his siblings. He passes through the Tower of the Hand, where Tywin held the Small Council meetings, and is now in shambles but the lion sigil still firmly intact. He then heads towards the cellar and takes the same escape route Jaime had taken him through on the eve of his scheduled beheading courtesy of their father's sentencing, when Tyrion was falsely accused of killing Joffrey. Tyrion walks through the rubble and remains of the Red Keep, searching for his siblings when suddenly he spots Jaime's golden hand underneath a large pile of rubble. Devastated by this sign, Tyrion clears away the rubble stone by stone to find the corpse of his sister Cersei, and is visibly shaken by it. Knowing his brother is next to her under the debris, Tyrion painfully continues to clear away broken rock and begins to cry when he finds Jaime. His dead brother's death-wish has been fulfilled: Jaime "died in the arms of the woman he loved."
Outside the gates of the city, the Dothraki are celebrating their victory. Jon Snow pushes his way through the crowd of Dothraki and Unsullied towards the gate, upon which a huge Targaryen banner is now victoriously hanging. Drogon appears with Daenerys and lands behind them. She walks out to address her army, amidst much cheering from them. "You tore down their stone houses, you gave me the Seven Kingdoms," she tells the Dothraki. She also praises the Unsullied and calls her forces “liberators” for “freeing” the people of King's Landing. Tyrion comes to the scene, looking devastated by his brother's death. Daenerys now wants to break the wheel and enlists her army to aid her in “liberating” not only all of Westeros, but the rest of the world. After her speech, coming from behind, Tyrion approaches Daenerys, who then accuses him of treason since he freed his brother Jaime. He replies, "I freed my brother… and you slaughtered a city," and with a look of disgust he throws away his "Hand of the Queen" brooch down the ash-covered stairs. Outraged by this show of defiance, Daenerys has Tyrion arrested and commands her men to take him away. Perturbed, Jon and Tyrion make eye contact before Jon turns to face Daenerys. They share a tense silence before she leaves.
Some short time later, Jon visits Tyrion in his cell and they speak of Daenerys' ruthless actions. Tyrion admits he was wrong to betray Lord Varys, whose concerns over Daenerys turned out to prove correct all along. Jon struggles with what Daenerys has become and wants to believe the war has finished, trying to reason her actions due to the various traumas she’s recently suffered. Tyrion, however, tries to make Jon see the irreversible threat Daenerys now is. Tyrion tells him, "I know you love her. I love her too, but not as successfully as you, but I believed in her with all my heart. Love is more powerful than reason." Jon reflects, "Love is the death of duty." Tyrion corrects Jon in this instance by retorting that “duty is the death of love.” Tyrion realizes he's asking Jon to do a terrible thing, but tells him it is also the right thing to save the people as Daenerys is now the biggest threat to the kingdoms. Tyrion warns Jon that Daenerys will always view him as a threat to her reign because he is the true heir to the throne. Jon struggles with what Tyrion is asking of him due to his love for Daenerys. Tyrion reminds Jon of his sisters, Arya and Sansa Stark, expressing his belief that they will not bend the knee to Daenerys. Jon leaves, troubled. Afterwards, Jon tries but is unable to dissuade Daenerys from her path of destruction. In the melted throne room, Jon reluctantly assassinates Daenerys, upon which he is then imprisoned.
After weeks gone by, Tyrion is released from his cell and tried in the Dragonpit before all of the lords of Westeros. Tyrion convinces Grey Worm to let the new ruler of the Seven Kingdoms punish Jon, after the lords in the meeting oppose the Unsullied's desire to execute him. Tyrion then asks the gathering that they should elect the new monarch of the Seven Kingdoms and end the war once and for all. Tyrion proposes an elective monarchy, "And who has a better story than Bran the Broken? A boy, pushed from the tower, who couldn't walk but learned to fly. The crippled boy who crossed the wall and became the Three-Eyed Raven. He's all our memory. Who better to lead us to the future?" Despite concerns that Bran could never sire any children, Tyrion says it is for the better as heirs often don't make good kings, a nod to Joffrey Baratheon. He proposes that the lords choose Bran as their new king, which is accepted by all except Lady Sansa, who insists that the North will become an independent kingdom again, as it was for thousands of years. Bran agrees to this, accepts his appointment as King and picks Tyrion as his Hand, in order for Tyrion to atone for his past mistakes and for committing treason against Bran's predecessor, Daenerys.
Afterwards, Tyrion visits Jon and informs him that a compromise has been reached and he is to be exiled back to the Night's Watch. Jon accepts this and asks Tyrion if what he did was right. "What WE did," Tyrion corrects. Jon says it doesn't feel right. They bid farewell, Tyrion telling Jon they'll see each other again, saying he’ll want to "go pissing off the Wall again.” Some weeks later, Tyrion reforms the small council, now consisting of Bronn as Master of Coin, Davos as Master of Ships, Samwell Tarly as Grand Maester and Brienne as Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. Samwell gifts Tyrion with a book he partly wrote about the War of the Five Kings named “A Song of Ice and Fire”. Tyrion assumes that this historical reference doesn’t paint him in the best light, as Samwell awkwardly informs that he is not mentioned at all. King Bran then states that some positions are still vacant, which Tyrion assures will be filled before the king departs to search for Drogon. They then discuss the rehabilitation of the city, providing clean water, food to civilians, and the reconstruction of the royal fleet and ports. As Bronn discusses using some of the gold to rebuild the city's brothels, which is met with opposition, Tyrion relates how he once brought “a honeycomb and a jackass into a brothel…” As the last surviving child of Tywin, Tyrion has finally become Lord of Casterly Rock, the title his father tried to deny him of for many years. Although reluctant as Hand of the King, he now has the opportunity to do what he is best at, as a free man without the threats and persecutions of his family.
